Persistant cradle cap in a 2yo

DS has had cradle cap for months. I only ever wash it with dentinox shampoo, but it will not go away.

Have been really good and am not picking at it.

Does anyone have any tips or old wives tales that can get rid of it.

Olive oil works well. Rub some into the scalp a few hours before bath time and then wash it off with ordinary shampoo.

olive oil.. rub into scalp, leave as long as possible (try for overnight) shampoo out (put shampoo on dry then rinse) Then comb with a fine tooth comb

Dd was very similar due to phobia with water near her eyes so it was never rinsed properly at the front.. consequently she was caked in it

Doh, olive oil, don't know why I didn't think of that, used it on him when was smaller, guess I forgot as he has hair now!

yaddayah, I think it may have been caused by poor rinsing as well.

Thanks

DD1 (aged 5) had cradle cap. I used everything, including Dentinox shampoo, olive oil, Vaseline etc. and it kept coming back.

Last year I used baby oil and it worked like a treat. Put it on and scrape off with nail about ten minutes later! It's hard to wash baby oil out of hair but it really worked.

I was told by a doctor that Dentinox can be quite severe and an anti-dandruff shampoo every so often should keep it at bay.

I didn't ask, but just searched on here when DD had it some months ago, and a lot of people said their kids' cradle cap never cleared up until they got nits at school, and the tea tree shampoo and fine tooth comb seemed to clear it up. So I got the shampoo (and conditioner) and comb, used those and it's pretty much gone now. I'm also well prepared for school and nits next year!

I did try oil once, but DD has fine, shoulder-length blonde hair, beautiful normally, but it took three nights to wash it all out and in the meantime she looked like she'd been dipped in chip fat, it was a bit grim.

This is a very helpful thread! When you comb, do you have to be quite firm on the scalp, to get it off? Sorry if TMI!

woodenchair · 08/11/2007 21:56

Dontcallmebaby, what you describe with your dd hair is what I fear for ds. He also has fine hair.

Do you remember which tee tree shampoo you used? Was it the original sauce one?

It's Lanes tea tree shampoo, googling 'tea tree shampoo children' (without the quotes) brings it up as top result. Also got the non-rinse conditioner.

I just made sure I gave her head as firm a massage as possible, while she tried to escape in the bath, and it started to come away when combing. Quite a lot of hair came away with it, a reminder of what can happen if it gets really bad.

think you have prob already got this answer but i asked hairdresser last week (DS age 4 still has it)
she said baby oil, massage well, comb, then use mild baby shampoo to wash it out. i presume my DS will have very shiny hair from now on...

HandbagAddiction · 09/11/2007 11:24

Very useful thread as dd1 also 4 still has masses of it too...I will be off to buy eiher baby oil or tea tree shampoo this weekend. Not quite sure how I'm going to persuade her to let me comb her hair...normally we have to use a very soft brush..but I guess for us NOT combing frequently is probably what has exacerbated the problem in the first place!
