Hi my 19 month old daughter has got ulcers on her tongue and now a cold sore on both sides of her mouth. I have also had spots on my tongue for the last couple of months which won't go away. We went to the doctor but she really wasn't much help. Does anyone know what these are?

Does she have any blisters/spots on her hands, feet or bottom? Mouth ulcers are sometimes a sign of hand foot and mouth virus.

Is she run down generally? Is she sleeping/ eating well? Mouth ulcers and cold sores are a sign of being run down.

Alternateively it could be that she's allergic to something - I get mouth ulcers with certain toothpastes.

no idea but do you have a dentist you could ask - they are really good with stuff like that in my experience.

she hasn't got any other blisters anywhere else. she goes to nursery and i think finds it hard to sleep there so she might be rundown. the woman who looks after her at nursery has also got a cold sore.

do everything you can to help her not to be rundown - plenty of sleep, good food, vitamins (maybe ask your GP about suitable vitamin supplements) and also visit your dentist. So many ulcers and cold sores is very unpleasant.

My DD had lots of very painful mouth ulcers on her tongue. The GP said it was most likely that she had caught the cold sore virus which tends to have particularly strong symptoms the first time it appears. The ulcers went away after a few days, but DD had great difficulty eating while they were around. The GP recommended eating cold things (e.g. lollies and ice-cream) and waiting it out. My DD hasn't had a repeat episode since and it's been about 6 months or so.
