Help, This is controlling my life

Hii I'm just looking to sound out what I'm currently experiencing and see if anyone has had similar and got any advice.

I'm 27 and have always had infrequent periods and different levels of heavyness. I went 4 years without a period a few years back. Im on no form of contraception currently.

A month and two weeks ago i began with light bleeding, which progressively got worse until i was bleeding through pads and clothes within an hour of changing. I had had a pregnancy test before this so knew there was no chance of it being a miscarriage. I contacted my GP who prescribed me with norethisterone, this stopped it for 1 day and it started back up worse than before. After a week the GP saw me in person again and did an internal exam, she confirmed there was too much blood and clots for her to see anything and referred me to A&E to see the gynea team. My GP spoke to gynea on the phone who said "to just put a coil in me" to which my GP refused on the basis that she wasn't goint to put a coil in me without knowing why this is happening.

I went to a&e and the gynea asked me if id considered having a coil to which i said no, as i want to find out why this is happening before using something to mask the symptoms. He then did an internal exam and disappeared. I didnt get to see or speak to him again. I was given an injection of tranexamic acid and sent home with tablets of it without any answers. The tablets stemmed the bleeding, I'm still taking them but its getting heavier again each day.

I went for an ultrasound today who confirmed they couldn't see anything apart from my lining looked thick but the ultrasound tech said it could just be because of my cycle and they wouldn't know because i dont have a regular cycle.

I'm now at home, with awful pain, and bleeding getting heavier by the day and running out of tranexamic acid. My GP is away until Wednesday next week but I'm baffled as to what they're going to be able to do now and i have no answers as to whats even causing it.

Has anyone experienced similar and got any suggestions? Thank you for reading all of this.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Have you had any further follow up with the GP?

I had a really similar experience. Got nowhere with my GP so self referred to gynaecology. Had an ultrasound which sounds very similar to yours, nothing of note other than thick lining. The gynaecologist basically was not interested in doing any other investigations and her only advice was to try the Mirena coil. Like you I was not keen as it felt uncomfortable treating symptoms when I didn't know what the problem was. I had also had contraceptive injections in the past which caused me constant spotting so I wasn't sure the Mirena would be right for me. But I was desperate at this point (was having to take changes of clothes to work etc) so decided to give it a go.

I have to say it did really help to reduce the bleeding however did not stop it completely and I continued to have spotting and light bleeding throughout so after about 10 months I had it removed. After which my periods have returned to normal. So non the wiser as to what caused it all to begin. I did though have the copper coil fitted before the Mirena so it was possibly due to that.

Has your bleeding been daily for over the past month? I was getting a week of non or light bleeding between mine so not entirely the same situation so I can understand why you may not want to try the coil. Can you self refer to gynaecology in your area?

Was the ultrasound a vaginal one? I know they can't always see much from just a pelvic one. I would chase for a vaginal one, could possibly be endometreosis or PCOS?

I would push for futher investigations - blood tests, even an MRI.....I don't think TA should be a long term solution, i've been taking it for 3 years and I'm just about done with the bleeding ruling my life. If you're loosing that much blood you're at risk of being anemic. If you're taking full dose TA and the bleeding is getting heavier I would go back to A&E. Also take ibuprofen for the pain and it's meant to help with the bleeding (although I've never been convinced). They will try and push you towards a mirena as it's seemingly the NHS's cure all for bleeding issues!

Hi I have had very similar - stood up from the bed a couple of times and blood pooled on the floor (TMI sorry) - awful!! I was sent to Gynae and similar they suggested coil which I don't want as want another child.
However I have PCOS so it was put down to that - it might be worth mentioning if you have any of the other symptoms?

I am technically under gynea in my area but i havent heard a word from him since my trip to a&e so I'm giving my gp a call tomorrow to see what my next steps are going to be.

I've looked at the symptoms of PCOS and my ultrasound tech confirmed my ovaries looked fine so i dont think its that but thank you for suggesting it 😊 x
