Traumatic tooth extraction

cheninblanc · 16/03/2021 22:53

I had a tooth removed yesterday and it ended up being 45 minutes of pulling and digging. I'm obviously bruised and sore and expecting recovery to take a lot longer, but what would be a reasonable recovery. Now I'm a day on I feel a little tearful at how long it took and if there's any damage caused to other teeth

I had something very similar many years ago. I was having to hold my jaw so it didn’t dislocate as the dentist was pulling the tooth. Was the most painful experience of my life.

I was in so much pain afterwards my partner called them up to say something isn’t right and the dentist prescribed me strong ibuprofen and co codamol to alternate every two hours.

I barely ate for a week but after that everything was absolutely fine.

I’m sure once the pain subsides everything will be fine.

landofgiants · 16/03/2021 23:09

I had this a few years back - took about an hour to get the tooth out. To be honest I was quite shocked about how painful it was afterwards (I'd had one out before and thought I could handle it) but was only bad for a few days and probably better after a week.

Unfortunately I have not been brave enough to go back to the dentist since, which is obviously stupid!

Marypoppinsbrolly · 16/03/2021 23:13

I had this before Christmas. I was in a lot of pain the evening of, once the numbness wore off, then felt very fragile for the next couple of days.
In all honesty it was about 9-10 days until I felt properly better again but it didn’t really hurt this whole time, it was more feeling sore and head achey and generally a bit under the weather. I remember realising at the two week after point when I felt completely fine again that I hadn’t realised how poorly I’d been feeling! It surprised me - I was so focused on getting the tooth out to get rid of the pain I hadn’t considered what the recovery would be like! Mine took an hour to get out although I’d gladly do it all over again instead of having to deal with the tooth pain!

Carry on taking painkillers and be very careful around the extraction site, no vigorous rinsing or you can get a dry socket which is apparently incredibly painful.

We're moving this thread over to our General Health topic for the OP. Really hope you'll be feeling better by the morning. Flowers

cheninblanc · 16/03/2021 23:25

Thank you Dawn. And thank you for all your replies, I really wasn't expecting it to be like that and for so long, the dentists fist was in my other cheek and forcing my mouth open so I currently can't really open my mouth properly due to swelling. What a mess!! Your positive endings have reassured me thank you x

Marypoppinsbrolly · 16/03/2021 23:35

Are you taking ibuprofen it really helped me with the swelling. It’s grim now and it might be a grim week or so on and off but I promise you it will suddenly get better really quickly and you’ll be amazed at how speedily it heals over

safariboot · 16/03/2021 23:40

I had an even longer attempted extraction that ended with the tooth not being extracted! Was referred to a specialist. Once it was finally out it hurt a lot the same evening, but recovered over the next week. No damage caused to any other teeth.

LunaHeather · 17/03/2021 00:23

OMFG

I had two extractions - awkward as my jaw is too small and childhood dentist should have removed them. They were fine.

Has this been dealt with correctly?

I am so sorry OP.

Icanflyhigh · 17/03/2021 00:38

I had 2 bad extractions on 26th January this year. I'm still sore now if I'm honest and gums haven't yet healed.

cheninblanc · 17/03/2021 11:47

Thank you all for responding I feel better knowing it wasn't just me!

Marypoppinsbrolly - I'm alternating pain relief today thanks to another posters suggestions and experience so keeping on top of it today.

Safariboot - I'm so glad you had no other damage, that reassured me that I won't either

Lunaheather - I was worried as she kept getting new tools, pulling, tugging and 2 xrays. I think I just expected it to pop out and she wouldn't give up till it was done!

Icanflyhigh - I hope you feel better really soon and it all heals xx

Feeling a touch less sore this morning so a bit more relaxed which helps

Just to balance this, I had a tooth extracted last week, a back molar, it took a couple of minutes only, and was painless afterwards. I was surprised with how easy it was to be honest. Having an extraction is never nice, but threads like these tend to attract bad experiences and don't necessarily give a balanced view. I'm saying that for the benefit of anyone reading who is due to have an extraction!

cheninblanc · 17/03/2021 19:06

SealSong is good to have a better experience shared I agree. It's all too easy to focus on the horrible stories

As difficult as it was, it's good that she persevered and got it done. Usually they do just lift out, but sometimes the roots can be bent in funny directions, so it's tough to wiggle them out without breaking anything.

(I had a dentist break one so that I had to go to the hospital to have the rest removed. The surgeon who took the rest out was quite cross that it had been left)

superking · 17/03/2021 22:15

I had a very difficult wisdom tooth removal once - it was impacted and I couldn't believe how much force the dentist had to use to get it out. She was basically bracing herself against me and using her whole body weight and it took about 45 minutes! It was a very unpleasant experience, though not actually painful as the anaesthetic did the job.
Amazingly after all that it actually healed really quickly and I had very little pain or swelling.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Gleps · 19/03/2021 09:15

OP I just wanted to add I had a wisdom tooth taken out years after my horrible extraction and I was expecting a similar experience/ pain but it was absolutely fine!

PivotPivotPivottt · 22/03/2021 10:45

I'm just back from the dentist and it was the worst experience she didn't even get it out 😭. I had a tooth that had broken offthere was a tiny bit left but when she went to pull it out it turned out the piece of tooth was already separated from the root and the root was about 4 or 5mm into my gum. She was tugging for ages and using all different tools but had to give up. I've to go back in 2 months time as it should have worked its way down by then and be easier to remove Sad. I thought I was going to have a panic attack in the seat I couldn't catch my breath. I feel so pathetic I've came home and can't stop crying I cried all the way home too Blush. I'm really worried about the pain I'm going to be in the numbness has almost wore off now Sad.

cheninblanc · 22/03/2021 17:33

Oh pivot I'm so sorry you've had this today. Take some ibuprofen and paracetamol and get some cocodamol in just in case. Lots and lots of water too. Mine is still swollen, sore, still on regular pain meds and I can't really open my mouth to eat much, but it does feel better daily so going with it. Pivot let us know how your doing xx

I had a long series of appointments for implants , extractions , etc. Most of my procedures were painless. But one extraction was difficult. I told the dentist afterwards that he was so focused on what he was doing , that I think he forgot that there was a person behind the mouth ! It was the manipulation of my jaw and face that hurt most. Got to the stage where I just planned around it to take ibuprofen immediately after and topped it up.

Thank you for your well wishes I feel so pathetic. I just feel really down and emotional after the appointment I don't know why its effecting me like this. I was working this evening and just had no motivation at all and don't feel like speaking to anyone.

I don't have any pain thankfully (yet!) but my mouth is really uncomfortable like a tugging, pulling sensation I don't know if its just in my head though as the more I think about it the worse it gets 🙄

Sorry to hear you are still in a lot of pain that must be really difficult Sad. Hopefully it gets better really soon and you don't suffer too much longer Sad

cheninblanc · 24/03/2021 19:32

How are you feeling now pivot? Sadly I've got a totally locked jaw, eating and brushing my teeth are incredibly painful and I'm still using pain killers but not as much. Weight loss is great though!! Hope your on the mend now x
