On crutches and need to start weight bearing but struggling

Any advice?

Had ankle surgery a week ago. Nothing has been broken but they have cut into the fibula to remove a growth and also debrided and decompressed my achillies tendon.

I have crutches and was told to be non weight bearing for a week and then try weight bearing, still using crutches but be guided by pain. Well it hurts. It hurts at the back of my leg where I think the stitches are, my tendon feels tight. And the bone hurts.

But how much pain is normal. It doesn’t hurt if I keep the weight off it. But I’ve tried weight bearing today and managed a few steps, now it’s throbbing. Do I just persevere? I’m not sure what to expect.

Years ago I had a knee arthroscopy and was on crutches for 2 weeks. My GP bollocked me and said I didn’t need to still be on them. It was agony for about 2 hours as I think my leg had seized up and was then ok. So not sure if this is the same but scared about damaging the ankle....I’ve got a hole in my fibula and have images of it snapping,

Hi OP, can you request physio from your GP or self refer? This is exactly what they can help with. They need to talk you through why weight bearing is good for bone healing using your x-rays and surgical notes to reassure you. Have you got some good pain relief on board?

Hi, I’ll ask about physio....though I suspect the waiting lists are bad. Maybe I’ll see about a private physio. I’m taking ibuprofen. I’ve got codine but not taking it, maybe I should!

As a veteran of surgery and recovery I would say little exercise, often and successful.
So for me. 1 set of 3 stretches and 1 trail of weight bearing. Feel pleased with that and repeat twice more in the day.
Advice is always useful from the professionals.
