Increase in thirst - breastfeeding 8 month old. Diabetes??

Hi all,

I'm breastfeeding my 8 month old baby - she has formula during the day while I'm at work but just breastmilk the rest of the time (days that I work from home, and weekends). I pump once during the day if I'm at work. Breastfeeding has always made me thirsty, but the past few weeks my thirst levels have gone into overdrive! I'm worried it's a sign of diabetes...

I had gestational diabetes when I was pregnant, but my post-pregnancy Hb1Ac test came back in the normal range. However, I had still been eating the same relatively low carb diet I was on during pregnancy. Since the blood test came back fine, I have been eating more carbs and sugar.

Is it possible for my thirst to randomly increase due entirely to breastfeeding, months after I started? Or is it more likely to be diabetes? I still have my testing kit so I am planning on testing my sugars this week.

Honestly, I would just go back to eating low carb and no sugar. It's the answer if it is diabetes. You'll quickly see if your thirst declines.

Thanks Diana, that's what I'm planning to do! I'm just hoping it's due to breastfeeding instead... :D

Don't you have any prick test left at home? My sister had GD and kept measuring her blood glucose for a while after the birth.
Can you book a GP appointment or call? Excessive thirst is something that needs to be checked. You have been breastfeeding for 8 months and if it feels different and not normal, don't guess, give a call.

Not sure you know @pinknsparkly but there is a diabetes section on MN here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/diabetes
