Anyone had T wave inversion on ECG

18 replies

PotNoodles234 · 14/03/2021 13:51

I had a routine ECG last week and it has come back with T wave inversion. Dr wants to refer me for an echo scan but told not to worry. Well I have now googled and scared myself. I feel ok in myself but did have covid a few months ago. Any one know anything about what it might be

I have it, it was confirmed in a second test but is completely benign. I had a heart ultrasound to confirm that it is structurally normal.

Greybeardy · 14/03/2021 14:26

It’s significance depends on where it is on the ecg, whether it’s new/old, how deep it is and whether it’s associated with any other ecg oddities (and with why they’re were doing the ecg). No one on here is going to be able to tell you much more than that, but it sounds like your GP’s on the case though.

PotNoodles234 · 14/03/2021 14:36

Thank you so much @MySocalledLoaf for replying. I'm really hoping my echo scan is normal. I'm fairly young 30's and all over observations were normal

Thanks @Greybeardy. They don't know if it's new or not as it's the first ecg I have ever had so they have nothing to compare. I had it because I had covid a while back and I was asked to be part of a trial and was picked up then

Do you have to have any follow up or anything?
Misspacorabanne · 15/03/2021 07:36

Yes I have, and after more testing they concluded it was normal for me. Try not to worry op. I hope you are seen quickly and have your mind put at rest.

PotNoodles234 · 15/03/2021 08:37

@Misspacorabanne thank you so much for replying, that's really reassuring. It's the waiting for the scan that is the worse. I'm so anxious

I remember it being a fairly long wait to be seen, about nine months for me, and I felt like you very anxious, but I just kept telling myself that if they suspected that it could be something urgent then they would rush it through. Same goes for you op. I know you'll be anxious, but just try to keep busy, it's highly likely that they are just being cautious and it's nothing to worry about. You will feel much more reassured after your test. Smile

Thanks so much @Misspacorabanne Your post has made me feel so much better Smile

@Misspacorabanne
I am going through similar now and I am so anxious about the whole thing. Can I ask what tests you had?
I'm currently waiting for an mri scan but I can't concentrate on anything so scared about the whole thing. Did you have any symptoms?

Misspacorabanne · 17/08/2021 10:14

@Formybabies in the end I had ecg (multiple times) and a 24 hour heart monitor, I did wonder if I would need anything else, but the cardiologist was reassured by my results. I felt like you during my wait, I think I must have gone to visit my gp so many times during the wait for a referral, for reassurance, he must have been sick of me, and this is how I ended up having a fair few ECGs, I know now that the reassurance only helped in the short term, and then the worry and anxiety always crept back in, I suffer with health anxiety any way so this for me was a very anxious time. I'm sorry I don't have any tips for getting through the waiting, just really to keep telling yourself if they had any big concerns they wouldn't hang around. I know it's hard but try to believe that. I did chase up my referral afew times too, I was waiting almost a year in total. You'll be ok. Smile

Formybabies · 17/08/2021 10:33

@Misspacorabanne
Thank you so much for replying. I've now been waiting 5 months since my first abnormal ecg, the wait is horrendous, one minute I'm okay and the next I'm in tears imagining all sorts. I suffer from health anxiety and I think Gp is probably sick of hearing from me. Did you have any symptoms? I don't know if I do or if it's just my anxiety/panic attacks. I'll hang on a bit longer and then try and chase it up. Glad to hear everything turned out okay for you x

Misspacorabanne · 17/08/2021 10:57

No I've never had symptoms, but I just had an ECG with the Charity cry (cardiac risk in the young) and it picked up these inverted t waves. So I was referred through them. But I did develop heart palpitations whilst waiting for my referral, unless I'd always had them but never noticed,but during my wait to see a cardiologist I was so focussed on my heart and every little bit of pain and palpitation I was terrified, but I think it was due to anxiety. As soon as I saw the cardiologist they stopped, although I do get them occasionally now if I'm anxious/stressed I just try not to over focus on them as it makes me more anxious. Does your gp reassure you at all? Does it help? If he/she does then try and keep thinking of that during your wait to see the cardiologist. My gp did ECGs and told me the referral is just a precaution, he thought it highly unlikely anything was wrong with my heart so during my wait I just kept telling myself this whenever I felt anxious! You'll be ok, the cardiologist said t wave inversion can be really common and it doesn't always mean anything wrong with the heart. He explained it as everyone's hearts are in the middle of the chest (obviously) but if they are say a mm or so slightly over one way or the other it can show these abnormalities on ECGs, but the heart itself is actually fine, just means the leads on the ecg are never quite where they should be.... Something like that anyway, if it makes sense. Smile

Formybabies · 17/08/2021 15:50

Thank you so much, it's really reassuring. Mine were picked up accidentally also but since finding out I've been imaging all sort of symptoms. GP has reassured me but I can't help but panic (I've always been a bit of a worrier). Thank you again for replying x

@ Formybabies have they given you an idea of what they’re looking for?

I second what other posters have said in that if there is an immediate concern they would be pushing these appointments through.

i have multiple heart conditions so am all too familiar with probably every test known to cardiology, Wink and where possible they do try to push testing through as quickly as is necessary.

One thing though is that you should stay away from google. No good can ever come of going there. Most of the information on there is wildly out of date. I’m on the cardiomyopathy UK fb group, and the number of people who join just after diagnosis very upset that google has told them they have a maximum of 5 years to live is unreal, and they are always reassured by people who have lived with the condition since birth or for the last 10/20/30 years, and all of them, without exception, including the heart failure nurses on there, advise people never to go looking for info because what they find is very likely inaccurate.

Formybabies · 17/08/2021 16:23

Hi @AlternativePerspective
Thank you for your message. So they haven't said specifically what they are looking for but in a clinic letter they have sent to me it says it could be a number of things. At first they thought it could have been a heart attack but cardiologist has since said no after blood tests, chest X-ray and echo was normal so now they have said they are looking for any evidence of myocarditis because I did have covid a while ago and the letter does mention cardiomyopathies and the possibility of having genetic testing done. I'm so worried by it all. Do you have the "t wave inversions"?

MissAtomicBomb1 · 16/01/2023 22:51

I know this is an old thread but how did you get on @Formybabies?
I have pericarditis at the moment but inverted t waves have been picked up on my ecg. I've been referred for further tests.
