Foot drop

Hi, I just wondered if anyone had any experience of foot drop?

I've had some issues with sciatica over the last 3 weeks with pain in my left hip and buttock initially which then became pain on the outside of my lower leg - still with some pain higher up. I got pain killers and anti-inflammatories along with 6 x 2mg diazepam in case of muscle spasm after a phone consultation with my doctor. The pain was much worse when I got up from a lying or seated position but would walk off. I did get checked out for DVT due to the calf pain but this was negative. The higher up pain is now much less although still quite sharp at times.

About 2 weeks ago I noticed that it felt like I was slapping my left foot on the floor rather than going heel to toe and I couldn't raise the toes on my left foot. I spoke to the doctor at the beginning of the week as I needed more anti-infammatories and he was a bit concerned and said he would phone me today and if things were the same, would get me in for a face to face appointment which I had today. He was talking about the possibility of nerve compression and is now referring me to a neurologist for review.

Has anyone had or seen similar? What were the causes / diagnosis / treatment? I hadn't really thought much about it and only mentioned in passing but am now a bit concerned!

Any experiences welcomed - and sorry that got a bit long!

Hi OP, do you know when you are due to see the neurologist? In my mind foot drop is quite an urgent symptom of nerve compression which involves a scan of the back-particularly as you’ve recently developed sciatica at the same time. I don’t want to go against your GP but I’d press for a second opinion.

Hi, my GP did talk about writing today to the neurologist as it was a quicker way of referring. He does seem quite on top of it as he phoned me this morning and then had me in about 2 hours later for a face to face. He did tell me that if it gets significantly worse that I should go to A&E.

Thank you for the heads up and I will think about the possibility of a second opinion, it's all been a bit of a surprise from thinking it was nothing to being referred!

My left foot also does that, I do find it difficult to walk with it. I was referred to a neurologist beginning of December and it’s a 18 week wait.I’m seeing a Orthotic on Friday because I will have to wear a afo to help me walk.
