Chest infection with no symptoms?

I have mild asthma and over the last 4 weeks I've felt like I can't breathe at times or my chest would feel heavy so I would take my inhaler didn't really help but breathing would eventually feel better after a while.
Cut to last night I started feeling like I couldn't catch my breath, fast breathing, dizzy lightheaded, was very scared kept taking inhaler didn't work.
Saw my doctor this morning who arranged a covid test for me, I felt it was my asthma that had progressed from mild but after checking me she said I have cracklings in my lungs and have a chest infection, I am on antibiotics and will be put on steroids if my covid test comes back negative.
Anytime I've had a chest infection in the past I've always had symptoms of a cold, sore throat coughing etc but other than the breathing over the last few weeks I had no other symptoms? So glad I went to see doctor this morning, how can you have a chest infection without cold symptoms? Just baffled to know?

I believe you can have pneoumonia with no symptoms, crazy I know!

Exactly as above, i felt like I had the flu from Saturday-Wednesday. Wednesday night I couldn't breathe without discomfort, Thursday my lung collapsed.

@TheCanyon poor you you must of been so scared that's frightening how it could progress like that.
Pneumonia with no symptoms @MorePotatoSalad that's my anxiety through the roof! That's very worrying isn't it as if we don't have enough to worry about

I would be 99% confident it's your asthma and no infection. However it's standard to give both and crackles can be hard to define.

It's the time of year, you feel like your asthma is worse anyway, if it weren't for Covid they would have just given you the steroids anyway.

I had steroids for mine a week ago - it's the time of year with the pollen and the damp. Luckily I Covid test regularly for work so didn't have to wait for a test, felt 1000% better overnight after steroids.

@AnnaMagnani Good to hear the steroids made you better quickly, as long as I'm negative tomorrow which I'm sure I am then I'll be put on steroids.
Very scary when you're breathing is affected.
