Bloody head lice AGAIN

Just thought I would do my routine comb through with the nitty gritty (must admit I let it slip the last week or so) and found loads of lice big uns & small uns. I have had a gutful of it now. I am sure there are still some there but she got bored and wouldn't let me check anymore. DD is 5 btw.

HELP!!!!!!!!

you need to keep on top of it (at least twice a week) the nit comb and conditioner (or serum) is better than these overpriced treatments

pageturner · 07/11/2007 10:10

You have my sympathy. We've just had another round of the little buggers. Realised last night that the eggs left behind on dd's head must have hatched because I found quite a few tiny ones.

I always feel I wouldn't mind quite so much if they served some useful biological/ecological function, but they don't.

Elibean · 07/11/2007 10:14

There's a nit warning at dd's preschool this week, I checked her head last night and nothing but she has fine, fair hair and it would be easy to miss the eggs.....if there's NO lice, can there be eggs? I suppose, if a louse laid some then bogged off to someone else's head in preference?

SickOFNitsandLice, I have no advice...just questions, and anticipatory sympathy...

I use tea tree oil in the shampoo or conditioner.

Body Shop used to sell tea tree oil shampoos and conditioners but unfortunately they seem to have discontinued that line. A nice lady there advised me to buy the essential oil and add a few drops to their normal shampoo or conditioner instead. Like I said seems to have done the trick. Not had any more for years.

Alberto Balsam do a tea tree conditioner for 99p - always use it when we have nits. But does it work as a deterrant? That's what I want - there are nits in both kids classes and as soon as we treat, they come back. I want something that when a pioneering louse gets close to a stand of one of my kid's hair it goes 'ewww, not getting into that one' and stays put. Anyone got any suggestions?

Use olive oil

Put olive oil all over dry hair and leave in for 6 hours

Using nit comb and standing said child on newspaper - comb through the hair and remove the nits

Now wash the hair

Now dry the hair

Now use hair straightners to kill eggs left on hair

Repeat every four to six days for 4 weeks.

Can't see my ds liking hair straightners!

ivykaty44 · 10/11/2007 11:55

Then leave the hair straightners for the girls and do the rest - it will get rid of the little blighters but make sure you repeat more often every two to three days.

Often it appears that nits have been caught again - this often isn't the case it is because the eggs have hatched and not been killed of before. Eggs take three weeks to hatch

I've just bought a nittygritty comb and I love it! The whole thing is so depressing though isn't it?

tissy · 10/11/2007 16:54

lice lay eggs near the root of the hair- doubt if straighteners would be very effective at killing eggs, as you'd have difficulty getting that close to the roots.
