Best health insurance for cancer?

I have a strong family history of cancer. It's only recently that my finances have been good enough to consider paying for private health insurance. There just seems to be so much out there. I'm early 30s but have lost family members in their 30s and 50s to cancer so would really like to get something comprehensive sorted soon. Can anyone advise on who offers the best cover for cancer?

I have AXA through work and have been very pleased with their coverage (yes, for cancer) and their assistance. I called them when I was first diagnosed, then decided to stay in the NHS but then Covid hit and last summer I came out and went private. My case manager handles everything in the background and has been just excellent so I don't really worry about anything. Also my doctors are turned on to the insurance so won't push for anything not covered.

I have them through work, and it is the enhanced coverage, so I couldn't tell you what it costs, but I would start with them and get a quote.

Finally, if you have early onset cancer history of breast or ovarian in your family, do try and get genetic testing for the BRCA mutations. It could save your life to have awareness or to take preventative measures. Best to do that after you have insurance in place, however, as it could count as pre-existing condition.

I worked for a leading health insurer for a long time and when I left continued to pay for pmi and it has been invaluable at times. I would highly recommend using a good broker, they will ensure that they find a policy that covers exactly what you need. They can also have access to policies that you won't find online.

One thing to be careful with is checking that whatever policy you take out, the cancer cover is in full at all times. I have seen policies that are considerably cheaper, promise cancer cover, but only cover the initial diagnosis and initial treatments. Some companies offer additional benefits/rewards, but think carefully if you will use them.

I second Axa, always had excellent service from them and am with them again now (through my broker). I have been with various different companies over the years You can lower your premiums by having an excess, so ask for quotes with and without so you can see how they differ.

I hope that helps and all the best to you @Benny11Letters.
