Had food poisoning about 6 weeks ago and ever since then i have had constant stomach problems from diareah, food just going straight through me, sudden 'desperately need the loo' stomach pains when eating, and today woke up with terrible diarreah which has also made me be sick. Had to come home from work early.

Called the hospital this morning but the on call doc said it just sounds like a bug.

yes ime food poisoning can affect your digestive system for a long time afterwards. Also can trigger Irritable bowel syndrome.

You can develop lactose intolerance after a bout of diarrhoea.

Try cutting out all dairy and see if it makes a difference.

There is a bug going around atm

Have you tried 'acidophillus' capsules from Holland and Barrett. Helped my DS after a bug

was also going to say IBS - can ahhpen as a result of food poisoning.

Look up IBS on the nhsdirect website to see if the symptons are similar - they sound like what I have and I have a bit of IBS

just read about ibs on the NHS website and a lot of the symptoms are what i have been experiencing

So do i need to go to the doctors to see if that is what i have then?

i dont fancy having any of the tests they talked about on the website!!

Salmonella can stay in the body for months after the actual infection. DS had to be tested regularly for ages after having salmonella.

Did the doc say that you had to be tested again?

three years ago I had a sickness bug which didn't clear up and I had similar problems to the ones you have for about eight weeks. I was back and forward to the doctor and thanks to work health policy got referred to a specialist to arrange a colonoscopy. He also did a blood test which was positive for gluten antibodies, so carried out a gut biopsy at the same time and it came back positive for coeliac disease.

He thinks I was living with it all my life, but the bug triggered things off. I was 35 when I was diagnosed.

I would go see your GP to discuss your options.

Yeah think i will tomorrow then. I hate being like this all the time

yes, if it was raw or undercooked food it could give you a bug (can't remember name) that can cause a stomach ulcer.

DynamiteDaisy · 06/11/2007 17:36

The bug is H. Pylori.
