I would like a coil fitted im unreliable on pill and implanon and it made me ill we have been ttc but we are thinking a break would be good.
i need to know the sorts of coils benefits bad things about them so i can make up my mind as the fpa is two bus rides with toddler and no children allowed into consulting rooms so need to be prepared thanks in advance!

I had a coil fitted for about roughly 5 years, was painless getting fitted, just a little uncomfortable, the first period after fitting was fairly painful as I never have bad period pain this was a bit of a shock, but after the first things were fine and I never had a problem for the next 4 years. Removal was fine too.

there's a HUGE thread on it in this section somewhere. there's teh word 'coil' in the thread title if you want to search it.

if you had a problem with implanon, a progesten-based contraception, then best to get teh facts before going for a Mirena coil.

TotalChaos · 05/11/2007 22:44

if you are only likely to have a brief break from TTC I wouldn't bother having something as potentially long lasting as a coil in. are condoms/diaphragm/persona not an option.

dd666 · 05/11/2007 22:56

not sure how long of a break really getting to stressfull ttc getting to point it will end up with us splitting if we dont stop,
hadnt really looked into it a lot just know im crap with pill and implanon no good for me

I am having a coil fitted as the pill makes my skin break out.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/11/2007 23:22

I had one fitted in February and fitting was uncomfortable but not excrutiating.
Afterwards, I experienced crippling period like cramps for about 30 mins, took some painkillers then was fine.
My horrendous periods calmed right down and I barely get one now. Probably 2 days max and very light, no pain at all.

But....

I am getting it removed this week as I get random crippling pains from my womb if I have been sitting a long time, or on long car journeys etc.
I have only had this since having the coil in.

ismisemama · 05/11/2007 23:42

I've had mine for 4 years ,no probs at all, the only thing that bugged me at the start was irregular light bleeding and spotting for about 3-4 months i think

Squiffy · 06/11/2007 18:04

If you want ot go for a coil you need to decide if you want a mirena or copper one.

Mirena - no periods at all but very controversial - lots of reported side effects. I seemed to be pre-menstrual ALL the time. Lost loads of weight when I had it removed.

Copper - heavier periods but no other side effects. Can be bloody difficult to get GP to fit one though as they seem to be blinkered about mirena side effects.

Insertion and removal never bothered me.

dd666 · 06/11/2007 22:25

thanks ladies i read the HUGE threads and now im not sure about the coil at all!
In all the time i had the implanon in i had heavier periods so if the mirena is progesterone like the implanon then it more than likely i will react in a similar way headaches weight gain nausea horrid cramping and heavier periods so think thats out!
totally confused now!

dont bother. i got pregnant with a coil

merlotmama · 06/11/2007 22:54

No, Mirena won't make your periods heavier...quite the opposite in fact, because of the hormones it releases. I had it prescribed for heavy periods and it worked a treat.

Remember that the folk who feel most strongly about it are the ones who have a complaint about it . People who are happy with it are less likely to post because they have no strong opinions/feel they have nothing to say.

qjbtc · 10/11/2007 11:14

I would also add that if a mirena cures heavy periods you would be more likely to put up with the side effects because they are better than the heavy periods. I've had a copper coil for 1 year, periods not much heavier but they are much longer. I'm considering a mirena but very concerned about the effect on my already awful migraines not to mention the weight gain, acne, etc !!!!!!!!
