hi all posting this here and other subjects as I need a reply quickly and don't know where best to put it. I want to go swimming and take 1yr old with me, not up to date with jabs (long story) does anyone know if this is ok?

Can't see why not, why would swimming pools be any different to say going to the shopping mall? My ds went for swimming lessons at 6 months and they never asked about his jabs.

ty toddlerbob, just thought I heard that some deseases could be in water that baby wasn't vacinated for. mught have been an old wives tale.

My 2 and a half year old hasn't had any jabs at all- he's been swimming from before a year old. Number 3 won't be having any and he'll be swimming as soon as he can cope with the cold iyswim. Come to that ds1 must be well and truly out of date by now and he goes.

There was always a theoretical risk that a newly vaccinated baby could pass on polio in a pool to anyone not immune. However the risk was miniscule and something I never worried about. With the introduction of the intravenous polio rather than the oral polio that risk will disappear anyway.

I thought they had to have had the first lot of Act-hib DTP/Polio/MenC??

I could be wrong but I think that's what the GP told me when I had ds1.

If you think what could be in the water - people have weed in it and everything!

But if they're not going to have any of those they can't be banned from swimming their whole life!

The only one that is spread by foecal route is polio- which is why the live vax was a theoretical problem.

oh and hib can be- but chlorine should put paid to most of those things. I worry more about communal changing mats to be honest.

Posted this on the other thread. I was reading the new leaflet about immunisations, and it says that contrary to popular belief you don't need to wait 'til your baby has had immunisations to take them swimming.

Interesting. I remember when I was looking for a pool / swimming lessons for my toddler and nanny I ran across one pool (in Teddington I think) that said toddlers could not join if the hadn't had mmr. As my dd is going for single jabs (and has one more to go) we looked no further there. I guess a pool has a right to set rules if they want. But I have never heard this rule at any other pool.

how on earth would they check Uwila? Also bizarre as m, m and r are all droplet spread...... Measles in particular is so virulent that I don't think being in a pool would increase its transmission rate. Not much science behind that decision on the pool's part!
