Painkillers like ibuprofen as they reduce swelling - codeine or cocodemol (sp?) are the best. I had this once, muscle was in spasm - maybe heat would help? Put a hot water bottle on it? that one is a guess though. Hope it's better soon.

Ice can be more effective at pain relief than heat, although heat is great with muscle spasm. You can take paracetamol, codine and ibuprofen at the same time for optimal pain relief. Try getting it moving ASAP, the longer it takes you the more painful it becomes, if you cant manage sitting up try lying down with your head fully supported and gently try turning from side to side and pressing the back of your head down into the pillow. When you get to bed try rolling a towel or pillow up to push under your neck to give it a bit more support.

If still in as much pain in a day or 2 get down to GP for stronger painkillers/musclerelaxants etc.
All the best

Use an ice pack for 10 mins on and 10 mins off (you can leave it off for longer but not on for longer or your muscles will get too cold.

Get decent antiinflammatories from your GP

No lifting and make sure your head and neck are supported as comfortably as possible at night.

After 48 hours when the inflammation has subsided a bit, go and see an osteopath.
