Gallstones attack - what to eat

Hello

I ended up in A&E with my first ever gallstones attack, the pain was something else.

It has settled down but I’m quite scared of the pain and nausea reoccurring. I’ve just eaten a (veggie) subway salad and was fine.

The attack was after eating junk food, so I’m avoiding this.

Has anyone any experience or advice ?

Thanks

I had mine out a few years ago but I remember avoiding fatty food and eating smaller portions helped.
The pain is definitely off the scale during an attack so you have my sympathy.

Thanks

I jinxed myself and am having some symptoms but more stomach, praying it doesn’t spread to my right side like this morning

Low fat is advisable, in fact a doctor in a&e told me no fat, but that sounds like dry bread and water.

I have gallstones, am waiting on removal, so you have my sympathy. The pain is off the scale.

Low fat , avoid any pastry. Also read that malic acid is good so may be apple juice.

I think people often say fatty foods are the main problem. This is theoretically sensible due to the purpose of the gall bladder.

However I never found a pattern and over time ticked of triggers from cornflake to vegetable soup ie for me there was no predictability.

My consultant said avoid eggs is the advice from Italy.

On my third trip to a&e I begged them to keep me in and operate. They did and I will be eternally grateful.

Fingers crossed you pain is settling.

Eating very low fat was the only thing that worked for me. I had to avoid eating any more than about 10g of fat at a sitting, for the 8 months until I had my gallbladder out. I was very very strict about it - as you will now realise, OP, once you've had a full-blown attack, you'll do pretty much anything to avoid another one!

I followed green traffic lights for fat on all foods. Had a lot of soup and no snacking.

Although I did like tantastics for a sugar hit when it was that totm.

What I did found that helped when an attack started was to put a pillow on the floor and on a puffy and lean over the puffy with the pillow jammed under my ribs. It stopped the pain becoming overwhelming. Didn't stop the puking. I even had a huge cushion for the bed so I could lean over that and try to sleep. You have to do it when the pain hits as it's painful to lean once it really kicks in. Saved having to ever go to hospital anyway.

I'm in Italy and was diagnosed in January. Advice is really just to avoid fats as they might trigger an attack.
My big one is chicken with the skin on.
There's a great group on Facebook called Gallbladder blabla run by an American called Buddy Black. I've got loads of tips from there- peppermint oil being a lifesaver.

I found fatty food, oils (olive oil etc), butter and weirdly citrus triggered me. Best advice I have is to keep a really detailed food diary as it really did help me pre-empt an attack pending my operation. For example I realised whatever they basted a rotisserie chicken in was a bloody tigger.

When you're having an attack. Personally I'd get in the shower as I found hot shower on and around the pain helped a bit. I was still in agony but it did slightly help.

I've come to the conclusion it's the lovely crispy chicken skin. Sad Felt like seven shades all day yesterday and traced it back to the beef stew, low on fat, heavy on onions.

Apple cider vinegar mixed with warm water gives me almost instant relief.

okokok000 · 26/02/2021 12:22

@StepOutOfLine could well be thinking about it. Sorry to hear you're suffering. Do be careful Re oils though. I was so sick on my honeymoon so went for "healthy" options grilled fish and salads. I was literally on the floor in agony as fish was doused in oil! Totally backfired on me!

StepOutOfLine · 26/02/2021 12:30

Yes, I was reading on a Facebook group someone being in agony from lettuce! Probably the oil.
