Low white blood cell count

I have had a low white blood cell count for over a year now. My GP has only just noticed as I recently had a blood test triggered by swollen hand/investigation to RA. My neutrophils are 1.4, lymphocytes 0.9 and white blood cells 2.8. These are all lower than normal and have been like this for over 18m. I have no other issues other than thinning hair (low ferritin, but no idea why). I am fit and sporty, have normal energy levels, have regular periods. However I'm always cold, often irritable and recently, always thirsty. GP has no idea what's going on and I've just had more bloods done today for other markers. Has anyone else had similar and had a not too terrifying diagnosis?

I always have low lymphocytes (0.65 was the last one) although neutrophils are in range. I've mentioned it to the GP and heamatologist and they've all said it's fine and nothing to worry about.
I do have several autoimmune conditions and various symptoms though, so I have always assumed it's sort of normal in that context? If you are being investigated for RA, which is an autoimmune condition, then presumably it may be linked to that?

I also have low ferritin by the way, which is finally being treated after being low for 5 years (it was low but within range - just!). It's amazing the difference that is making, so make sure you get treatment for that

Thanks Hazel, I've just started on an iron supplement sent by my trichologist for the ferritin and will re-test bloods in 3 months. Interesting to hear that you've noticed a big difference in treating low ferritin - in what way? More energy? More hair? A new joie de vivre?
GP says I don't have markers for RA (although I know not everyone with RA has these markers, so I still think it's a possibility). I have rosacea on my nose so maybe that's not rosacea but lupus. Either way, something is going on with my immune system.

I've only been taking iron tabs for a month but I was totally out of breath even going up stairs. Couldn't do anything really without gasping for breath. Utterly exhausted all the time.

I'm no longer breathless at all and am noticeably getting my energy levels back (I also have pernicious anaemia which affects energy levels so I'm never 'normal'). Will keep an eye on hair!

With the recent thirst, I presume diabetes has been investigated?

Mythreeknights · 01/03/2021 09:33

Yes, apparently I'm not diabetic. Should get second test results back this week. I'm slightly on edge about it! I was completely shattered on saturday - had no energy at all.

Yes I have similar blood results and have for the last couple of years and was diagnosed with RA last year.

How were you diagnosed Somewhere? I've been told I've been referred to X-ray, but that was 2 weeks ago and not been given an appt yet. Might take 3 months. My hand is now back to normal so there's nothing to see there (long may that last). I've also been told rheumatologists are in short supply due to covid, so it's unlikely I'll see one until this is all over. Can I ask what your RA symptoms were other than low white blood cell count?
