Who here has experienced eye floaters?

I'm 24 and have had these annoying things for a couple of years. I've been to the opticians and a specialist, who have all reassured me my eyes are very healthy with no underlying conditions (relief!) and eye floaters are just a normal part of aging.
Has anyone else experienced them? Tips on getting used to them welcome... thanks x

I get them. Although I have no tips you definitely will get used to them eventually x

I've got quite a few. If I concentrate I can see them, and new ones are irritating for a day or two. But day to day they are not noticeable at all.

If you get a sudden increase then you need to see an optician straight away as it can be a sign of retinal detachment. Short sighted people tend to suffer from eye floaters - they are really annoying but the less you focus on them, the quicker you get used to them and stop being so bothered.

Eye floaters are pretty normal. Most people have them I think, and tend to get more of them as they get older. If your optician and a specialist have told you your eyes are fine, then you have nothing to worry about. Mine are only really noticeable when I'm looking at a fairly light, blank background, like the sky or a pale wall.

I get them, my optician explained to me why I get more of them than some people will do - can't remember the explanation though but it was to do with being blind as a bat, basically - am v short sighted. They don't bother me, I only really notice them if looking at a light background as a PP says.

I've got them. Got used to them pretty quickly.

I have loads but don’t normally notice them. When I do notice them I’m normally in a very bright room. But yes don’t worry, you definitely do get used to them, I can go weeks without even thinking about them!

Very much echo this. DH has had them for years but recently had a non-sudden increase in them and the optician referred him back to the hospital where they discovered two tears in his retina. Thankfully they spotted them in time and repaired that day before the retina detached.

I also know someone who had a sudden retinal detachment which was missed by the optician and he has lost sight in that eye. It is definitely worth monitoring them and going to the optician straight away with any changes.

Thanks for the replies. How old were you when you developed them? And how long did it take you all to get used to them?

I get them, have had them on and off since...oh, at least late teens. They're annoying but so used to it now. I usually get them in the summer, according to the optician that's quite normal. Have none atm but in a few months time I'll have one or two!

Misstabithabean · 22/02/2021 17:36

I find wearing sunglasses when it's bright helps. Definitely more noticeable in bright light. They appear to come and go but I was told by an optician that they are there all the time but sometimes your brain ignores them and sometimes it doesn't!

PolarnOPirate · 22/02/2021 17:38

Yep. Had them since I was a child.

Jupitersmoon842 · 22/02/2021 22:45

I’ve had mine since teens, but I remember being quite bothered by them early 20’s, that’s when I mentioned it to the optician. I don’t remember it bothering me for long and early 30’s now and still don’t bother me. Sunglasses do help in bright light.
