Hi discofever - yes I had the same thing when I was 24. (now 38) Had one 9cm on one ovary and one 5cm on other. I had not had any symptoms, Dr picked up that something was wrong during routine check up. I then had ultrasound but they were not 100% sure until they did surgery. I was in hospital approx 1 week, although some of that was due to having to wait for all clear on tests done on cysts as Dr had some concerns about appearance of cysts. Due to size of cysts I had to have one ovary removed and half of other removed with reconstructive surgery on remaining half so it was quite a long op. I was off work and did not drive for 3 months. Was very tired initially and could only walk short distances / could not lift. Despite only having 1/2 an ovary I have gone on to have 3 kids. How old are your children?

hi there and thank you so much for your reply.

i have one daughter age 9, i am 38 and me and dh where hoping to have one more child before i hit the big 40.

anyway, i was in excruciating pain on halloween and ended up in hospital on morphine. on friday i had a ct scan which showed there where no kidney stones and in fact cysts on both ovaries, the larger one being on the right hand side which is where i had the pain. the doctor says that each cyst has a tooth in it. i am due to see the gyne within the next week or so for a consultation.

I was given date for surgery very soon after seeing consultant - infact I saw consultant a week before Christmas and had op first week in Jan (NHS not private!)could have gone in earlier but wanted christmas at home.
Dermoid cysts are apparently made up of skin, bones and teeth and are solid as oppose to fluid filled cells.
I am not sure how soon after op you can ttc - may period came bang on time month after op but I did have quite bad period pains for about a year after op which I had not had before. I had ds1 when I was 33 so a good while after surgery - took 1 year to conceive, then went on to have ds2 and dd1 both coceived after about 4 months. No problems at all during pregnancy or birth.
Due to size of cysts I had to have vertical incision usually they do horizontal bikini line. I have scar but once redness had faded it was not too obvious, could wear bikini on holiday (pre kids!)

did you have to stay off work in between being diagnosed and the operation? was it ok to drive? i dont know if i should be laid up in bed or just carrying on as normal with it. What did you do? thanks. xx

I carried on as normal, but then I was not in any pain or discomfort - until I had routine check I had no idea anything was wrong. I carried on working, driving etc - did not do any sports or anything particuarly physically demanding.
How are you feeling at the moment? Is it causing you discomfort?

I could not drive for 3 months but I think that was because of size of incision - from belly button to bikini line, I am sure with keyhole surgery or even with a smaller incision it would be a lot less. It was also quite a long time ago when I had mine so techniques have probably improved alo since then.
I actually found the worst part of the whole thing was the week before the op when I was worrying about it - once it was done it was just a case of resting up.

DiscoFever · 06/11/2007 09:05

hi there, no, its not causing pain now but last week it did cause immense pain which is what landed me up in hospital on morphine as the cyst had twisted. i am so scared its going to start up again and havent received my appointment yet to see the gyne. I think worrying is the worst part - you are so right.
thanks again for all your information - am going back to work today as i spoke to my doctor and she confirmed it was ok just to carry on as normal.
Take care.

xx
