Back pain relapse is this is forever

Have been suffering since last summer. Was finally diagnosed before Christmas with a slipped disc. By that point the pain was unbearable. Have been in physio and getting gradually better but woke up yesterday sore and seized up again. I’m so gutted. I have a toddler and feel like the worst mum ever I’m failing. Any time I seem to be making progress something happens, it’s just the annoying thing is I never know what the something is. I just went to bed and woke up in pain again. Is this normal? Is this me now forever?

No it's not you forever but I know how debilitating back pain can be. You go along all jolly etc and then it strikes again and it makes you so miserable.

What are you doing for it? You need to be very proactive with back pain issues to get on top of it

I'd suggest the below ... mix and match as you see fit

Physio
A TENS machine - they're a great distraction
Alternating hot and cold at the source of the pain
Regular pain killers
Simple stretching exercises done 3 times a day
Gentle walks
Hot baths
Sleeping with a slim pillow between your knees
Heat patches
Bed of nails

Lalalockdown · 21/02/2021 13:10

A life of pilates, gentle pilates to start! Pilates and yoga with katya is good on YouTube. But start super gently! It should lead on from your physio.

Oh and naproxen is the only painkiller that ever eased my pain enough to get mobile.

Chasingamy · 21/02/2021 13:56

Thanks @PamelaCake and @Lalalockdown I just feel absolutely devastated it just takes over my whole life as I can’t do anything and even if I push myself all I can think about is the pain. I’d worked hard to try and get better and it’s so sore again and I can’t even figure out why or what’s caused the deterioration. I’m in regular physio and doing all of the others on the list apart from the tens machine and painkillers as I’m pregnant (conceived the first time I thought I was getting better only to deteriorate again). Don’t have a bed of nails but will look into it. I’ve been doing daily yoga for backs but will look into Pilates too.

I found yoga (and I had been a very passionate and committed yogi) didn’t help and in fact was the cause of some of my pain.

Oh you poor thing, and pregnant too. That truly sucks. Back pain is so incredibly all consuming and debilitating. Hot water bottles and the tens machine sound like a good idea. I think there was a book called the bad back bible that did help me a lot.

Chasingamy · 21/02/2021 17:05

Oh that’s interesting @Lalalockdown i wonder if the wrong stretches just aggravate it then. I’ve been trying to do the specific back pain yoga YouTube stuff and oked it with the physio but as I say not quite sure what’s brought it back on so maybe I need a rethink. I’m just feeling so sad (admittedly sorry for myself) as I thought I was on the mend and it feels like back to square one. Thanks for the book recommendation I’ll look it up willing to give anything a go!

Back pain is a horrendous type of pain. I feel for you. I suffer regularly, usually more the sciatic nerve. Nothing specific triggers it. Had a flare up about 3 weeks ago getting progressively worse until by the beginning of last week I was in agony with lower back pain. I ended up asking for Naproxen from my gp as I'd heard it was good . It is very effective so I second the pp who said it's excellent. Other tips :

Use Deep heat /ice spray
Use a hot water bottle /heat pad
Gentle, stretches throughout the day
Move as much as possible

I am going to look into heat pads and possibly a, chiropractor.

I am always in more pain on rising so try to loosen it. Are you a front sleeper, Op? I am and I'm convinced that it isn't helping so i
am trying to train myself to side sleep. Not easy.

Good luck, Op. I hope you find the solution to getting more pain free soon.

Bbq1 · 21/02/2021 17:17

Oh, you're pregnant too, Op. I missed that. You poor thing.

ShirleyPhallus · 21/02/2021 18:13

The only other thing I’d add is to go and see a physio and make sure you’re doing the exercises properly

It’s really easy to be doing loads of Pilates etc but without engaging your core properly which won’t help with your overall strength

doadeer · 21/02/2021 18:22

Oh that's so difficult with being pregnant I was going to suggest lots of core!

I've got effussions on my facet joint and it's horrendous with inflammation.

I also have a toddler. The only thing that touched the pain was coedine but maybe you can't take that? I felt nothing from naproxen.

I stopped yoga as that just wasn't what I needed.

What exercises has the physio given?

doadeer · 21/02/2021 18:23

The stronger your back and core the better supported but you need to be so careful what exercises you do being pregnant.

Chasingamy · 21/02/2021 18:34

@Bbq1 I used to sleep in what I’d describe at the recovery position but back and pregnancy has put an end to that and sleep on my side now with a pillow between my knees
@ShirleyPhallus seeing a really good physio now I actually saw a few before getting to this one and was misdiagnosed which made things worse
@doadeer that sounds incredibly painful was that diagnosed with a scan? I was in such agony end of last year despite being pregnant I was given a short dose of dihyrocoedine but it didn’t do anything, I don’t think it works for some people. Mostly my exercises have been to loosen my back as my muscles had become rock solid seizing to protect the disc

OP posts:
doadeer · 21/02/2021 18:46

Oh that's interesting very different recommendations to me. I was thinking you'd be advised to strengthen your corset style muscles to protect your back.

I had a pregnancy from hell where my pelvis was such a mess. A year post birth the pain moved to lower back and I've had two MRIs yes.

Can an osteopath help you?

doadeer · 21/02/2021 18:46

You might benefit from hands on manipulation

Lalalockdown · 22/02/2021 07:48

Op you sound very very similar to me.

Post partum, I really really REALLY recommend someone called Better Body After Baby by Julie Baird (for all of you back pain ladies she’s on insta as ourfitfamilylife). She strengthens core through a lot of specific breathing exercises.

OP yes I had done yoga for years and even now if I go back to it I end up in pain again. It stretches you in a very particular way and for some people ultimately it just might not work. Do you get hip pain?

I had the spastic muscles too, so badly that by the time I sought help I was prescribed Valium to relax them (anti spasmodic as well as tranquilliser it seems!).

In my desperation (and with the yoga background) I turned to meditation - really recommend headspace) as there was some evidence it helped with allowing the muscles to ‘let go’. It really helped me, I’ll never forget one session (all lying on back on mat with knees bent) one huge muscle in hip area just finally unspasming and the relief was insane.

Body control or APPI pilates both good. Basically a lot of very good pilates teachers are also physiotherapists, which is perfect as they really understand anatomy. I have left pilates classes run by perfectly lovely exercise bunnies before because I realised they didn’t have the understanding of my issues and so kept insisting that I ‘should’ be able to do xyz.

Oh - I think that julie Baird has a prenatal programme too. I didn’t do it as only discovered her this year but worth a look.

Oh, and Epsom salt baths but that may be contra indicated by pregnancy?

freeandfierce · 22/02/2021 08:07

Sympathies, I've had many years of back pain so understanding your pain. Some good suggestions above. Without being able to take pain relief you will need to do anything else possible. Have you got a supportive mattress and pillow? I found a firm mattress that moulded to me plus a shaped tempur pillow helped, I also bought a pillow shaped to go between my legs to keep my spine aligned. I had spinal manipulation under GA followed up by laser treatment (not available on NHS) made a massive difference long term. Hope you find some relief.

jewel1968 · 22/02/2021 08:08

I would add acupuncture to the list. I have had it on NHS whilst pregnant and suffering back pain - from slipped discs.
TENs machine great too.

Chasingamy · 22/02/2021 13:17

@doadeer I actually saw an osteopath but I was having horrible spasms in my legs and he didn’t equate them to my back and wouldn’t even give me exercises to help so I lost a bit of confidence. After 3 visits and £200 was no further forward.
@Lalalockdown yes I’d heard diazepam stopped spasms but can’t have anything like that at the moment. I am determined to do Pilates post baby and I’m my back isn’t in complete tatters by then so thanks for the recommendation. Have been using Epsom salts didn’t think to check the pregnancy safety Blush
Thanks @freeandfierce have a memory foam mattress which i find a lot better than our old one
Might have the check out the acupuncture @jewel1968 I thought I was doing so well in my recovery this time I’m just so gutted the pain has come back in such a big way

Thanks so much for replying everyone it’s nice to fell less alone. Sure I’m descending into becoming a bad person as I’m jealous seeing people walking, cycling etc past the house happy and pain free!

Really understand you, it’s so hard and many people don’t understand how quickly it shrinks your world.

Chronic pain has been the most lonely thing I've ever experienced. Frustrated, angry at my "stupid body" - it's really impacted my life massively.

I know a wonderful pilates teacher who is saving my life, happy to give you details for post baby if you want to do Zooms with her

So sorry you're feeling rotten. Wish I had something to say that will make you feel better 💐

jewel1968 · 22/02/2021 20:32

I also had SI joint dysfunction when pregnant - just to add a bit of variety to the pain. A support belt really helped with that. Worth exploring other possible causes with a physio.

Chasingamy · 23/02/2021 19:04

It really is lonely. Getting group WhatsApp messages from other Mums about what they’re out doing with their toddlers etc. I’m obviously happy they’re happy especially in these times but it always just reminds me of what I can’t do. Thanks @doadeer that would be good. Thanks @jewel1968 saw the physio today thinks it’s muscular rather than disc this time but I’m terrified all the time and still very painful. Pregnancy does seem to have exacerbated everything and also ruled out of a lot of painkillers. Paracetamol is just no use to me!

OP posts:
doadeer · 23/02/2021 19:18

I recommend rlsportstherapy.com

If you follow her on social media she posts loads of interesting stuff and advice.

I could be wrong but muscular seems a better thing for it to be than the disc? Can the muscle respond to massage? What sort of stretches were you given?

Chasingamy · 24/02/2021 07:59

Thanks @doadeer I’ve looked her up on Facebook seems to be a lot for post partum and noticed some specific back pain stuff! Yes muscular is definitely better a much shorter recovery time and the pain level is definitely not where it was with the disc herniation. Been given exercises to gently stretch out my back muscles again. Just feels like it’s going in circles though since the summer, pain for weeks, a pain free ish week or two and then it’s back!
