Has anyone ever had a strange growth/lump in their mouth and it NOT been anything bad?

Please please please do not tell me about anything serious or bad that came from a lump in the mouth because I am sick with worry waiting for my ENT appointment.

I have a lump at the very back of my throat at the side (behind the dangly bit) been there for about a year. Or maybe just noticed it from then.
It doesn't hurt or irritate me, but I often look at my tonsils so that's how I have seen it.

I am unable to sleep, can barely eat. I just want to hear from someones experience that it was nothing or something easily dealt with.

Thank you Sad

I had a tumour which manifested as a lump (more of a bulge) on the roof of my mouth. It was benign and once removed required no further treatment. I guess it was fairly serious - 4 hours in surgery, couple of nights in hospital and a decent scar across my neck but other than that it wasn't too bad!
Are you unable to sleep and eat because you're worried about it, not because of the lump preventing you from doing so?
Honestly, stay off Dr Google too, it's the worst!!

soresore · 19/02/2021 16:45

Thank you for your reply. I have stayed off google!!

That's pretty major, wow! But reassuring for me as I am convinced it's the worst. Thanks so much

Depending on age /smoking status etc many lumps are nothing - was this a doc or dentist referral ? With the best will in the world a Gp isn’t a mouth specialist - see your dentist thry might even be able to clarify whilst you wait for ent.

As with the previous post out experience of a mouth lump was fine - my dad- late 80s , frail , dementia. Oral lump turned out to be tonsil lymphoma. Even at his age and lack of fitness he had radiotherapy and was cured.

soresore · 19/02/2021 16:48

@emmathedilemma sorry, I meant to say the worry is causing my to loose sleep etc. it isn't even noticeable to me in my throat/mouth

@Helenluvsrob thank you

I had a telephone appointment with ENT about a cough and I mentioned it to them (the cough is unrelated I feel)

I am 31 , non smoker; relatively healthy.

Look up Torus Palatinus
It’s a hard, bony lump which grows in the hard palate. It is harmless.
My mother has one, it can make fitting dentures difficult but has not caused her any other problems.
It has been known to shock inexperienced Gps who have never come across one before.
My mother blames me for hers. Apparently it grew after she became pregnant with me.
She is over ninety now, so it hasn’t done her any harm.
I hope everything goes as well for you.

soresore · 19/02/2021 16:58

@WhataMissMap that made me laugh. My DS is 1 and a half so I'll be sure to blame him if that's what it is 🤣

Yes, had a lump on roof of mouth for over a year. Eventually had it biopsied. Absolutely fine, can’t even remember what they said it was now! Salivary glands can get blocked. And it eventually went away on its own.

Helenluvsrob · 19/02/2021 17:04

@soresore see your dentist. They’ll probably have the answer abs you can relax

soresore · 19/02/2021 17:04

@SparklingLime thank you!

This is at the back of my throat. Behind the uvula

I have a couple of lumps in my mouth and cheeks, nothing sinister. Please don't worry until you need to worry!

soresore · 19/02/2021 17:05

@Helenluvsrob I actually spoke to my dentist years ago to ask something about my tonsils and they said that I have to see a doctor for anything other than teeth! I feel cheeky calling the doctor when the ENT doctor told me he will be seeing me ASAP

Hi. I have one on my cheek - dentist was able to tell me it was just a polyp. Like others mentioned, maybe you could get a dentist appointment if doc isn't available

soresore · 19/02/2021 18:16

@Dithery thank you. I think I will see ENT next week, just trying to ease my anxiety until then

Try rescue remedy for your anxiety.

I get one that pops up every few weeks as a hard lump on the inside of my cheek and then fades about 2mm. Funny thing is my dad and my niece also get this. I was showing off mine and then my niece showed me her cheek lump - much bigger - at least 5mm round.

Then another round nodule right at the back of my throat if I say AHHH, it is very apparent to me - sort of going down my throat but I can only see it when I say AHHH, it about 3mm in size, I went to the GP with it about 14 years ago, he couldn't see it, despite me saying AHHH, so no referral. It hasn't grown or disappeared.

SallyOMalley · 19/02/2021 18:28

Yes! I had a small recurring lump at the back of my mouth. It would grow and burst, grow again, burst again. I mentioned it to my dentist who referred me to a consultant at the hospital. He looked at it, wondered aloud why I had been referred and told me it was nothing. I was in and out in 5 minutes! And, typically, the lump hasn't been seen since! Something called a mucocele, apparently.

Most lumps in the mouth are nothing to worry about. You are young and a non-smoker, your risk is low, its been there a while and is clearly not massive so this is a good sign.

However no one on this thread has seen it, so its definitely best to get it checked by ENT

soresore · 19/02/2021 19:05

@DishedUp thank you for the reassurance
