High potassium in teenager

Hi, my 16 year old ds has had 4 blood tests in the last few months which have all come back with high potassium readings. His first blood test was taken due to him having an enlarged lymph node in his neck (which is still there) the dr has said there is nothing to worry about regarding the lymph node but his potassium level is concerning. His first test came back with a level of 6 and he was called immediately into the surgery for an ecg, which thankfully was completely normal. He has no symptoms and does not eat a high potassium diet. He possibly does not drink enough water so I have been encouraging him to drink more but other than that we have no idea what could be causing it. My son has another drs consultation next week on the phone but just wondered if anyone else has experienced this with their child or themselves as I’m getting really quite worried. Thanks

Has he had it repeated? Potassium can be raised if it's difficult to get blood or if the blood lies around for a while.

Thanks so much for replying. Yes he has had his blood test repeated and has had 4 blood tests in total now. This is since early December The most recent result was 5.5 and we are waiting for a drs appointment - a phone consultation next week.

Apologies that reposted.

Has he been tested for Addison’s disease? Ask for an early morning cortisol blood test.

He hasn’t been tested for anything at the moment, just the repeated blood tests. I’m so worried for him, will mention the addisons test though if the dr doesn’t. Thank you.

Just looking for some more advice if possible. Having spoken to my sons gp, he has advised my son follow a low potassium diet for a month and then retest his levels. I’m not really happy with this as this will be his 5th blood test! Has anyone experienced this with their child or themselves? Any advice on how to follow a low potassium diet would be helpful too.We have already cut out obvious high potassium foods. My concern is that even if my sons level reduces, there still must be something wrong?

I suppose it will give them a clue as to what is wrong though? (You’d hope.)

Good luck with it all.

I think its a case of trying to rule things out.
