11 month old on 5th day of diarrhoea.....losing weight, but not 'ill'?

My dd2 has had the runs - average of 8 poos per day, undigested food, etc - since the beginning of the week. She's a refluxy babe, on meds, so vomiting when unwell is th norm for her but still...she's been sick more often than usual recently, entire meals and feeds of undigested food/milk.
She's lost weight over the past few weeks (not much, but she should have gained) and that started before the runs did - I'd hoped it was a mix of teething, increased activity, and endless colds. She's had a streaming cold this week, which I thought might account for the diarrhoea, but its a lot better as of yesterday...no fever, not much appetite, drinking milk but off solids, ok in herself but getting pale and thin and tired looking.

She's had a course of amoxycillin recently, and the GP says her gut flora might be out of balance, so we're giving her acidophilus in her milk, but also to do a stool sample on Monday and then tests for malabsorption...starting with coeliac, maybe even cf

Trying to think 'bug', but can't help worrying and could do with hearing others' experiences - either with ongoing diarrhoea or with coeliac.

I don't have any expertise in this particular area but didn't want to leave your post unanswered, so bumping it for you. Hope your little one gets better soon XXX

Has GP sent a sample away to be tested?

Elibean · 03/11/2007 08:08

Thanks, Crookshanks

Louii, I saw gp last night - too late for sample, but they're doing it on Monday.

She's had the runs twice this morning already, and its only 8am, so not settling yet [worried face]

Thanks again, louii.....glad to say dd suddenly picked up yesterday, stopped vomiting (because she'd got worse on Saturday with v added to the d) and ate a big supper. Back to sludgy poos and very relieved!

Appreciated your support, thanks

My brother was diagnosed with coeliac at this age (he's now 47). My sister developed it in her 30's.

To be on safe side, make all your own food from scratch so you know exactly what's gone in and keep some sort of a diary of what's gone in and out. That way you have a guage but also a record for the doctor.

My siblings swear by aloe vera juice for settling digestive tract but I am unsure of what age it can be given. The brand they use is Forever Living. Expensive but worth it, so I am told.

I would also try osteopathy for the reflux. It worked very well with my children, especially my third child.
