Lump in armpit

CambsAlways · 16/02/2021 20:12

I have lump in armpit, very painful, tight, full of pus, red round it, very imflammed rang my drs, but he wouldn’t see me, didn’t want pics either all of which I had done, showing within few hours how much it had inflamed, said that I should have antibiotics, also said as I am immune compromised I could become ill with it, and that I had to keep eye on it so not to go septic, Anyone else had this

I would phone 111 to speak to out of hours doctor

chilledteacher · 16/02/2021 20:41

Have you had your Covid jab? Could be your lymph glands swelling up. Common side effect apparently.

CambsAlways · 16/02/2021 21:03

No no covid jab, no cold or anything before hand either

Take the antibiotics, my gp saw me in April, gave me industrial strength antibiotics which had rush to the loo side effects. He was concerned about sepsis.

Yep, earlier in the year. It was about eight ingrown hairs, wrapped together. Came up as a lump, sent photos to Dr and she prescribed antibiotics. Took it a while to drain and it only went completely when the hairs came out. I have two enlarged follicles now.

Myal · 17/02/2021 00:11

Hi OP,
It may be Hidredinitis Suppurativa. Basically hair follicles grow inwards and cause an infection.
Antibiotics can help at early stages but please keep an eye on any redness and if it spreads, go to A&E for treatment.

In the meantime, apply a hot flannel, take some painkillers and if you have it, apply vicks only if unbroken skin. It helps with the pain and the swelling.
I've had HS for years and currently dealing with a flare up now.
Sending you gentle hugs Flowers

@Annietheacrobat

I would phone 111 to speak to out of hours doctor

Why?

QueenPaw · 17/02/2021 00:23

What @Myal said ^^
I also have HS and have had surgery in my armpit and I'm immunocompromised
Take the antibiotics, watch your clothes too and avoid things with obvious seams or that are tight around there. I use dettol soap under my arms
Mine either vanish or burst, if it gets incredibly painful and the redness starts spreading then OOH or a&e. Mine tracked down my arm and boob and then burst

Woke up this morning feeling very nauseous the lump started draining last night after putting warm water on cotton wool pads , the smell is horrendous and the amount of pus draining , I thought I’d be feeling better as it was coming out and hoped the tightness would subside as even holding arm up makes me yell, I’m going to get my husband to buy me some dettol soap, I feel lightheaded this morning but making myself drink lots of water, taking eurothromycin antibiotics, probably spelt wrong, the dr did say it sounds like a seboccous cyst also spelt wrong, the thing is I had this two years ago but it was pea sized lump didn’t hurt didn’t drain just kept there , the dr drained it herself, said it would possibly come back, she’s not wrong this is much bigger and very red round edges, hopefully I will feel some relief when the antis start working! Who would have thought a lump under your arm can put you out of action and make you feel so rough and dizzy

I would seek more medical advice now if you’re feeling lightheaded, rough and dizzy. You might need IV antibiotics.

CambsAlways · 17/02/2021 08:44

I’m going to see how it goes today as only just started the antibiotics only taken two dr did say it should subside in think he said 3/4 days of antibiotics, mind you I will be checking and seeing how I feel in myself and watching that the redness doesn’t spread at the mo it’s just round the edges

I had this a few years ago. I had to sleep Propped up on the sofa, I couldn’t lie down with the pain. It really knocked me sideways.
Strong antibiotics which made my face break out and also caused nausea.
It burst on its own, thank goodness DH isn’t squeamish.
I recall then getting it dressed with gauze by a nurse at GP surgery. Told me I couldn’t get it wet for 2 weeks- ie not wash my underarm. I found that very stressful.
Very sore for a few more days, I remember my sister took me to her house to look after me. This was over feb half term- I think I had 2 weeks off while I was studying. I would have needed to take sick time off otherwise.
My underarm is still bumpy now, and once it felt sore again so straight on the phone for antibiotics.
Sympathy OP, such a small thing but I know how bad it can affect you.

CambsAlways · 17/02/2021 09:20

Yes thorfull crazy that a lump can knock you off your feet! I actually thought I was made of stronger stuff, must admit I’m feeling bit of a wuss, I suppose being immune suppressed doesn’t help, drinking loads of water too

Had to post a picture so bloody painful, can’t believe a armpit lump can be so sore, I know it’s only the second day but Jeez making me feel so nauseous and dizzy

I get them from time to time, moreso when I'm stressed and rundown.

Best advice - don't put anything on it. Including deoderant - I stupidly applied spray on years ago when i had one and it got so bad that I had to have an incision made and my armpit sown up.

Make sure you have lots of fluids, avoid inflammatory foods and ensure you're getting lots of rest.

CambsAlways · 18/02/2021 17:56

Justasking111 I’ve just had my dinner and a magnum lolly but I will take it, 36.2 at the mo, I must admit it’s generally around 36.5
