What is average blood loss during your period?

FieryGlassSlipper · 02/11/2007 17:44

I now have a mooncup which allows me to measure .

I think I have heavy periods and I'm interested to know if this is indeed the case, or if I am just a big wuss who has been complaining unnecessarily for years ;)

I don't have a mooncup but have started having some heavy periods in the last 18 months (well, heavy for me that is).

Go on then, how much? How often do you need to change?

FieryGlassSlipper · 02/11/2007 17:53

I am on day 3. Today so far I have changed 5 times and there has been 7-10mls each time.

an egg cupful we were told at school

TheBlonde · 02/11/2007 17:57

35 to 40ml is supposedly average

suwoo · 02/11/2007 17:59

This was a very light period for me this month. On the last day (4) had 25 mls from 7am ish til 5pm ish. Normally have to change 5 times just in 'office hours' and also have terrible leakage.

NAB3sparklesandflashes · 02/11/2007 18:01

I didn't belive it but I read once that we loose 1 tablespoon of blood during a period.

NAB3sparklesandflashes · 02/11/2007 18:01

believe

suwoo · 02/11/2007 18:07

I remeber that from school biology- clearly bollocks.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 18:22

probably about a pint lol

DumbledoresGirl · 02/11/2007 18:24

Don't forget that your loss is not made up entirely of blood. There are other fluids in there.

Is it normal for the loss to be quite mucousy and sticky too? Never expected that when I started using mooncup.

zippitippitoes · 02/11/2007 18:29

surely you see what the loss is whatever means you use to collect it?

Fiery, I would say you do have pretty heavy periods then. But pre mooncups, how often would you have to change? Do you have problems with pain/other symptoms?

What about overnight, what's it like then?

(sorry if I sound nosey)

frankie3 · 02/11/2007 18:47

Change superplus tampons every hour for the first couple of days. Sometimes seems to gush and flood out.

Sorry if too much info!

Mercy · 02/11/2007 18:52

Frankie, that's very heavy imo.

I am using mooncup since my periods have started post-baby.

However, before baby my periods last 7-10 days and for the first 5-6 days I would use super tampons, change about every 3 hours and have to use pads as well. Overnight I would often have to change in the middle of the night.

They have always been very painful but since mooncup I have felt nothing at all which is totally bizarre.

Fiery, yes that sound pretty heavy - and weird about no pain since using mooncups - good weird, that is!

Frankie, I think you should see you see your Dr tbh. I'm 44 so it's expected really - these problems can be treated. Don't suffer in silence, please.

I'm all for bombarding GPs with period type problems

FieryGlassSlipper · 02/11/2007 19:39

Yes Mercy it is totally weird. And if someone was telling me I probably wouldnt believe it iykwim.

I'll have to get me one of these mooncups!! I've noticed I have more period pain when I use tampons these days which I found weird so I've been using pads which I dislike.

FieryGlassSlipper · 02/11/2007 21:09

I was getting pain with tampons or towels but so far none with the mooncup |
