Scoliosis in adults

Does anyone have any experience. I've recently been diagnosed, never had any symptoms it was accidentally picked up. I'm waiting for a referral to spinal orthopaedics to see what they decide. I'm just feeling really anxious about the whole thing

@wineandsunshine

No check ups at all - I think unless it flared up then it's not really necessary and I've had four children naturally with no problems.

Good luck op and I'm sure you will be fine x

Thank you so much, this has calmed me down so much x

@Five67Eight

So I went to the GP for back pain and she sent me for a couple of x-rays. One revealed the scoliosis, and the other revealed a fibroid in my uterus, which has apparently grown.

I now need to have an ultrasound of that, and then I’ll go back and we’ll be addressing next steps for both.

I don’t think it (the curvature) is something you can necessarily see from the outside. I have to admit my imagination was running wild as to possible causes of back pain, so when it turned out to be ‘only’ this, I felt somewhat relieved.

I don’t think you’re in any immediate danger - so try not to worry while you wait to see your GP (believe me, I know easier said than done). Flowers

Thank you for replying. Hope your ultrasound goes okay x Thanks

I have a double curve, upper and lower back. It is most visible from the side but with loose clothing it's not too noticable. The main issue i have is that i need to wear a bigger size on top, and always wear loose things. I was digagnosed at about 17, in my 50s now and never had any issues. I had an epidural on my 3rd dc and no one seemed too concerned about my scoliosis at all. I do get backache sometimes but that is more to do with my awkward gait, which is the result of an unrelated knee issue. I think my dds both have a mild case, they both have one hip that looks higher than the other, which is how my lower curvature presents, they have been checked out and didn't get a diagnosis though. It sounds like yours is very mild so no reason to think you will have any pain or problems.

My daughter was diagnosed age 22. No problems whatsoever and she hadn't noticed. It was me who noticed then the back of a dress didn't lay right. She has had an xray, mri and a consultants appointment but they are just monitoring it.

RuthW · 18/02/2021 20:37

Forgot to say it's upper back.

Apparentlystillchilled · 18/02/2021 20:38

I was diagnosed with an S bend aged 13 or so. I have 3 children and other than a sore pelvis when pregnant, it has never caused me a problem.

Honestly these replies have helped me out massively. Thanks thank you so much

DH was diagnosed with this in his 40’s when he was seen by a physio for an unrelated bad back.
He doesn’t see anyone about it.

ShopTillYouDropp · 19/02/2021 15:27

Hi @DinosaurDiana is you DH lower or upper and did he have to have scans or anything? I'm really worried as spoke to GP and they said they made an urgent referral to orthopaedics so that's sent me off again. I'm wondering if it's because I had been a bit breathless but since then put it down to covid. I'm just really worried about it all, but feel reassured by the posts on here

@ShopTillYouDropp try not to worry, it's great they are investigating it. I was found to have upper back scoliosis as part of investigations for long covid (showed up as part of a chest X-ray).

The GP couldn't have been less interested even though it was graded as moderate. I've since had lung function tests (again for long covid breathlessness) and they showed the spine curve was having no impact on breathing.

I have no back pain so think it's just one of those things I've probably had a long time. But I would like a referral to check it it properly (GP won't consider till we're not in a pandemic!)

ShopTillYouDropp · 19/02/2021 16:54

Thank you so much @givemeanother for replying.
That's exactly what happened to me, I was having investigations for long covid and they picked my scoliosis up on chest X-ray - upper back too!

Wow what a difference in GP's - I'm hoping mine is just being over cautious but for yours to not even refer until after covid Sad my mind has been thinking all sorts after I goggled it!

I have no back pain so hopefully I've had it years and just never realised. Fingers crossed you get a referral soon and thanks again for replying x
