Tinnitus or not?

Posting here but not even sure it’s health related. Just looking for ideas.

About 6m ago I noticed a humming noise at night. Sounds like a truck idling a bit, I now hear it all the time at home if the house is quiet. It’s worse at night and quite loud.

I can’t test it to see if I hear it in other quiet places due to lockdown but I don’t notice it when I’m out. I sometimes hear it in my garden. Although I think I heard it when staying at a B and B last year.

I have searched up tinnitus and this doesn’t really fit but wondering if anyone else’s has had this. Thing is it feels external rather than internal.

No one else in house can hear it. It’s driving me mad. I know some people can hear electric stuff or pylons but there’s nothing obvious near me. It’s like the house is humming!

Any ideas?????

I have tinnitus and this sounds a bit like mine. It's a very low humming, a bit like the constant noise a fridge makes. I was convinced it was the train line near our house until I heard it when I stayed at my mums miles away. I only hear it at night/ when it's very quiet and it's only in one ear. I was referred to the audiology clinic for a hearing test and MRI as it's unusual to have a low frequency in just one ear when you're quite young (I was early thirties), I had slightly reduced hearing in the affected ear but still in the normal range. It's worse some days than others and in all honesty I'm lucky because it really doesn't bother me now. I listen to sounds/a podcast when I go to sleep and now I know it's nothing to worry about I notice it a lot less. The consultant also said it will probably fluctuate and might just go away on its own.

If you think you've had it for around a year I'd get it checked out. Sometimes if you know it's "just" tinnitus then it makes it bearable, otherwise they can suggest things to help.

Thanks! The fact I realised I heard it somewhere else suggests it might be tinnitus then. It’s in both ears. I think.

Will go to gp at some point.

I started with tinnitus 4 months ago, strange head noise and different fluctuating tones in each ear. The place it's most noticeable (apart from bed) is sat in the car without the engine running, maybe try that and see if you can still hear it? I've not been getting on with mine very well. Would have been easier with one constant noise rather than 3/4 different ones that like to change and stop and start. Hoping it settles down eventually.

Good idea to try the car thing. Thanks. Hope yours settles down.
