Back pain - rest or remaining active, what REALLY works?

I've been laid up with really, really bad back pain this week, excruciating.

I know the up-to-date advice is to remain as mobile as possible and exercise. But, I feel better when I've just been lying down. No pain lying then and I am much more able to move around almost upright when I do eventually stand up.

So, which is REALLY the best treatment? Is this just another get-back-to-work-you-lazy-barstards ruse?

Tinker, sounds sooo familiar - when my back was really bad pre-chiro, I remember the horrible feeling of not being able to sit down, not being able to stand up, not being able to lie comfortably in bed ... Total drag, basically. Going to the chiropractor and having her put everything back in place was an experience verging on the religious. Never tried an osteo myself as I just happened on the chiro route and stuck to it, but imagine they're fairly similar - good luck!

How are you today Tinker?

What really helps me is sitting with a hot water bottle between my back and the chair. It gives me som much needed relief.

I hTH and that you are feeling better x

Thanks for more tips and for asking MP. Am still hobbling round like a crab but trying to remain active. But it gives me stitch-like pain sometimes when I just have to lie/sit down.

God, am bored of it now. Doing housework seems appealing!
