I'm having really bad cravings for a cigarette.....one year on! Encouragement needed!

I gave up smoking on 30th November 2006 for 3 VERY good reasons

  1. I lost my dad totally out of the blue at 62 probably contributed to by his smoking

  2. I lost my FIL over a very long period of time at 64 of a smoking related illness within a year of my own DF

  3. I was 12 weeks pg and didn't want to put my DCs through what I had to cope with. Neither my DF or FIL were around to see my DD....

So after reminding myself of all my good reasons for giving up....and not having many problems along the way (it was hard, but not AS hard as I expected it to be)....so WHY am I craving a cigarette so badly atm....its doing my head in....and I don't know why or how to stop it....and I don't really want to eat any more.....

Sorry....needed to write it down...not sure anyone can help....

go and brush your teeth

it helps

well done for stopping, i keep going back on them

sophiewd · 02/11/2007 09:50

Don't do it.

Just stopped as found out was pregnant, keep thinking bout your DC's

Tortington · 02/11/2007 09:50

dont do it - if you do you will die and your kids will have no mummy

starfish2 · 02/11/2007 09:51

Then you just take a long deep breath. And again. Not too many, so you don't hyperventilate
I smoked for 17 years, about 25 a day. I stopped in one go. I still crave them every so often...
The craving will not completely go away, but it will not last as long. Just wait and do not have another fag. It will not last long.

LittleMissNorty · 02/11/2007 09:55

Thanks....I honestly don't think I will go back....I've come too far...I know that if I have one, that'll be it!

I have 1000 JPS in my loft (DH hid them)....

These cravings are horrible though....and have come out of the blue....I gave up AGES ago FGS!

I'll go and do some housework...might help ....cleaning teeth is a good one...will remember that!

I stopped 6 years ago after reading Allen Carr's book. It was recommended by someone who had stopped smoking too and it worked for me. Your local library should have it, so you don't have to buy it if you don't like it...

dirtmonkey · 02/11/2007 10:12

I have given up too after many many failed, very short-lived attempts. I was hypnotised using neuro linguistic programming - it is amazing. Might not be for everybody but it is making it possible for me.

Think positive thoughts rather than negative ones:

I want to smell fresh & clean
I want to live a long life
I want to be fit to run & play with my DCs
I want ...

You are an independent minded, strong willed woman. You decide what goes into your body. You decided a year ago that no more toxins would go into your body - stick to your decision. You are in control - feel proud of yourself, feel smug, feel superior if it helps. .

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 10:14

yeahhhhhhh - clever lady for stopping! 1yr on means that you are over the worst - keep saying to yourself 'I am a non-smoker' followed by a little whoop of excitment! If you are having random cravings then go and DO something for half an hour (walk in fresh air etc) cos it will take your mind off it and it will pass. Better still - stay on mumsnet and go into another section and get away from this thread as it will keep reminding you....... (oops sorry - didn't mean that to be rude - can you start a new thread on something else for us to join in?) e.g can you recommend any good books/tv programmes?

charliecat · 02/11/2007 10:14

Imagine SHARING AN ASHTRAY with your oldest child.
Looking at the them knowing that they too have the addiction to the bastard things and you are were too weak to be able to stop and be a good influence on them.

crokky · 02/11/2007 10:28

Do not do it! Not even the one - my friend stopped smoking and she had not smoked for 22 months - then she went through a rough patch with her man, had one, it spiralled and she was back to smoking as she was before (she is still smoking 3 years on )

crokky · 02/11/2007 10:30

Would it help to get rid of the 1000 in your loft?

sparkybabe · 02/11/2007 10:33

Norty - don't do it! You are not a smoker any more!

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 10:33

agree with crokky - go and cut them up........

LittleMissNorty · 02/11/2007 10:45

Thank-you....can't bring myself to look at the pic...I remember seeing my FIL....I shall come back to this thread next time....god this is hard...I still have a lot of the inhalators that I used to help me give up, but I'm worried if I touch those again I will get addicted to nicotine again.......it must have left my body months ago so why am I feeling like this...

cravings should only last a few minutes

go out for a walk

i have just realised i havent had one yet today

charliecat · 02/11/2007 10:55

Its just a mind battle. you HAVE to win it.
YOU KNOW you dont want to smoke. Dismiss having JUST ONE from your mind. you have been ok before, you WILL be ok now. You really will.
Drink water, go for run round block, anything....every day you have as a non smoker is a good one. You are winning a battle that many dont even begin, let alone win.
Distract, drink water, brush teeth. Go look in the mirror. You dont want to be a smoker.
Waking up every morning NEEDING to smoke.

fullmoonfiend · 02/11/2007 11:01

I have crumbled too.. I feel very ashamed and stressed. I gave up on December 26th and didn't even make it to a year

charliecat · 02/11/2007 11:25

You can stop again you know, you dont have to keep doing it....fall over but get back on.
Its not making you feel good is it?

LittleMissNorty · 02/11/2007 11:31

Oh FMF - ...you can do it.....if you've done it once you'll do it again....

I haven't crumbled yet....perhaps it'll be easier when I go back to work after mat leave...
