Sores on scalp

Murtaghjames · 11/02/2021 15:02

For the past few weeks I have sores on my scalp. It happens every few months and although most of the sores go I always have a couple left. It gets to the stage where my scalp is sore. I've tried specialised shampoos but nothing works long term. I take vitamins, watch my diet etc. Does anybody know why I keep getting theses sores and any recommendations to get rid of them.Im female, 39, not on any medication.

Thank you.

I would say get someone to take some good photos that show them at their worst then book a telephone consultation with the dr so you can text the photos in and they can have a look.

T gel shampoo will heal them, it's really amazing stuff. I've had problems with sore spots on my scalp in the past and this stuff works right away.

I started to get painful spots and lumps on my scalp a few years back. Unconnected to it, I then switched to just using conditioner to wash my hair (curly girl) and they all went away. If I ever use shampoo, they come back, so it's clearly the shampoo for me but I have no idea why I would be sensitive to it after years of being fine. Might be worth trying though?

I get them sometimes as does my daughter. Happens when I wash her hair but rinse with existing bath water. In my defence, we rent and the hot water system is old and rubbish! Once we have filled the bath there is no clean hot water left to rinse.

Am going to fill the sink with a kettle plus cold from now on.

My DD had sores in her hair once years ago. I showed them to the doctor while I was there with dd2 anyway. It was impetigo! I had no idea.

Thanks Everyone. I tried the t gel last time and it didn't work. Going to make an appointment with my GP and see what she says.

Do in you use dry shampoo? That can cause sores. Otherwise I'd assume an allergy to shampoo or something in it.

LucasLeesEyebrows · 15/02/2021 18:16

Could it be the central heating? I find my skin and scalp (and for DD) are incredibly dry in winter. Even more so this year because we are cooped up indoors, 90 percent of the time.

Murtaghjames · 16/02/2021 06:10

@Tatogratin,no I've never used dry shampoo.
@LucasLeesEyebrows,dont think it's the central heating because it's happened when the weather has been warmer too.

My sister had sores on her scalp. At school the Nit Nurse said she had nits, every time. Mum faithfully treated dsis, but did query it, as she never found a nit.

It turned out to be a symptom of her liver disease.

Have you used a different shampoo/conditioner/serum/hairspray?

I get this often if as much as try to change anything out of the ordinary. I currently have a patch on the back of my scalp as I went to the hairdresser and used a different shampoo to my normal one. Over the years I have figured out that I must have some allergy to what is in products, the worst for me is any type of spray (hairspray, dry shampoo etc).

I am prone to eczema, and so I think its related. I have never had it checked out medically to be honest, but know I will have a flare up if I change anything, so I have just put it down to an allergy of some sort.

And then when products get discontinued I can just about shit myself as i have to start the whole bloody process again of trying to find something that suits...(I am in that process now, now trying out the Pureology range which seems to be ok for the moment) I have a cupboard full of hair products, and not cheap brands either that I cannot use.

Definitely see your GP and push for a referral to dermatology if necessary. I know someone who had scalp sores and it turned out to be dermatitis herpetiformis.

I have this and I use Selsun shampoo. I get it as a stress reaction but once there it’s really hard to treat. Selsun or moo goo shampoo are good but try Selsun first- nizoral and t gel won’t work unless it’s a fungal infection

If Selsun doesn’t work then you may need betnovate scalp application from the gp to get on top of it.
