Heart palpitations - when to worry?

I've been suffering palpitations the past 3 days,
they come and go throughout the day. I'm not sure at what point I need to do something about it?

I'm feeling off, physically tired needing to nap, and had a few lower than usual SpO2 readings. I have a headache too but quite likely to be caffeine withdrawal as I stopped it in case that was contributing to the palpitations!

I would say I do have a lot going on in my life at the moment with work, family issues, homeschooling... and the day they started I did receive some big news.

I feel like it's probably stress but not sure if I ought to check?!

It’s always worth phoning the Dr for a chat. It might not be anything too sinister -low iron & thyroid issues for example can cause palpitations- but it’s definitely worth speaking to them about it. I hope they can put your mind at rest Flowers

You should ring the dr.

SunshineCake · 11/02/2021 18:57

Definitely should be ringing 111. Or at least filling in the on line questionnaire. Hope it isn't anything serious.

I get them a lot since having my kids and was told it's common in women in their 30s. My Dr said she could have them and don't feel them but I do. In fact my friend had to have a monitor and she was having multiple a day and didn't feel them at all. Speak to your Dr just to ease your mind. I think mine are anxiety and stress. It's a catch 22 as I worry when I get them!

Test for covid. I had all those symptoms apart from low sats.

dreamerdreamer · 12/02/2021 18:32

Thank you all. Yesterday was a lot better so I didn't think about it too much, and it seems to have stopped today. I am waiting for Covid test results as I put my symptoms in the app and it wanted me to test.

That must be a great relief.
You shouldn’t ignore frequent episodes of palpitations in one day - try 111 of you don’t want to call GP.
Failing that, if you think it’s ‘only’ actually anxiety, it would be worth making a note in your diary to record the number and frequency for future ref.

Thank you.

Please do not ignore these, they will fit you up with a monitor and let you know the results quickly. It could be lots of things, but do not ignore this warning.

This starting happening to me OP, a few years back when I developed anxiety. I was in a right state and kept getting palpitations and a racing heart. When I went to the GP about it, he couldn’t have been less concerned if he tried but suggested I take propranolol, which I did. They certainly help calm the racing heart, which in turn makes me feel calmer. I ended up being referred to the cardiology department who put a heart monitor on me for 7 days. They said they couldn’t find any physical reason for my palpitations so it was diagnosed as anxiety related. It’s weird as sometimes I get them in response to immediate stress and sometimes I get them hours afterwards. I also find they can happen a few times over the course of a day or two (when I’ve been really anxious) and then not at all for weeks!

You definitely need to speak to your GP if it’s concerning you as the worry will just exacerbate them.

Palpitations are very common and very likely to be benign. I have had all sorts of heart tests for mine and spoke to heart consultants and some people can get up to 200 a day and be fine. The clue to worry about palpitations is if they are induced with exercise or if you have any other worrying symptoms at the same time as them e.g. dizziness, fainting, chest pain. I hope this helps.

addicted2spaniels · 20/02/2021 21:50

I went through several months of having them, and in the end, my GP sent me for lots of tests including a 24 hr monitor. They were nothing to worry about, and thought to be age/hormone related as I was in my late 40s at the time.

I just had this. Went to the docs for blood tests and turns out I'm anaemic.
