Surgery during c-section, can anyone explain?

If someone had a planned c-section, but during it cysts were discovered on her ovaries, as a result of which one were removed completely, the other partly removed, what could have been wrong to need such surgery, and what condition will she be in now (thinking of fertility, but don't know what other effects there may be).

Hope someone can help, been given very scant detail by a male relative.

2nd post on MN!!.

I had a cyst on one ovary which wasn't discovered until it had grown so large it had kind of enveloped the ovary - gross, I know. So I ended up admitted to hospital as an emergency case as I ended up in horrendous pain. So I guess they have removed the ovary whilst she was already opened up iyswim, to prevent this happening in the future.

Fertility wise, I was told that having one ovary would not affect my chances of getting pregnant - I can't prove this as I had 3 kids already and no intention of having any more. I do know of a woman who also had an ovary removed and successfully fell pregnant afterwards so it is still a possibility.

so , she did not know she had cysts, and did not know, until they were removed, taht they were bieng removed

i imagine if they were so big that they were going to cause serious problems, or looked as though they might be malignant...

hs she been to see anyone for a proper run down of what happened>

Don't know, Lulumama. She had a big breech baby, hence the c-scetion, that was Tuesday. Only news I've had is the phone call, she's had a boy, oh and btw this happened, sort of thing.

So I'm puzzled as to what they've done, and why, and what it all means.

What can half an ovary do on its own (I imagine it as a sort of bag of eggs, but it can't be like that, can it!)

I would imagine the surgeon must have thought at the time of the operation
'These must be removed' because he/she was worried about their appearance.
Very unusual to do 'extra ' things in an operation becuase she wouldn't have consented to it, so quite honestly, they should have a good reason for having done it.

An ovary is basically a bag of eggs with some hormone producing cells thrown in (actually the eggs/follicles produce half the hormones too).

As long as she still has some ovarian tissue I think she should be essentially normal as far as fertility and hormone balance is concerned. One ovary can produce 1 egg each month in the same way that 2 can. There are billions of eggs which never get released anyway.

If she had all of her ovaries removed she would obv be infertile and I think should would have been essentially menopausal. I could be wrong there. Anyway that isn't relevant as she still has some ovarian tissue.

My nephews' wife had an ovary removed because of ruptured cyst after dd1, which then tested as malignant on cytology so she had a very lucky escape. Dd2 born 2 years after dd1.

when you do the consent for a CS, they ask you to give consent for them to do anything which is deemed necessary while they're in there, which makes sense really
