Is anyone one awake? Worried about DS's breathing

DS (15 months) woke up crying about 15 mins ago. DH went through to soothe him, but noticed that his breathing was sounding odd. It's like his inward breath is a sob (short and sharp sounding iykwim). Kind of like if we'd let him cry for ages, and he was catching his breath.

OK since I started this we decided to call an 999 and he's gone to hospital with DH.

He seems pretty much better, but the paramedics thought it would be best to get him properly checked.

Shit. That was/is scary.

I suppose I'm worrying it was perhaps an asthma attack. We have no history of asthma though, and he's not had any coughing or anything...

sorry - I'm awake but can't help.. just wanted to let you know you're not alone! I'm sure he will be fine now in the safe hands of drs.. maybe a little asthma attack.. my DS also just woke up with breathing like that about 30 mins ago, but only lasted about 10 seconds. I was pretty freaked out myself.

SpawnChorus · 01/11/2007 01:52

Thanks

He wasn't wheezing or coughing and his colour was normal throughout. It was really very odd though

I'm wondering if he maybe was having a really bad dream, and then just woke up a bit hysterical.

That sounds really scary SpawnChorus.

DS2 used to do something like that in his sleep in his first year. Almost like his breathing had got out of sync. He wasn't still doing it when he woke up iirc. I used to scare me a lot at first and I would prod him to see if he stopped. I got used to it in the end - never enough to go back to sleep until he had finished doing it though. I used to think he was dreaming. I suppose he grew out of it as it doesn't happen now as far as I know (he is 4).

I hope your DS is OK and back home soon and it really is something as simple as a bad dream.

Hi, I'm here too if you want to talk. Sounds like he is being taken care of and that's reassuring. He'll be home soon. {{{{{{{}}}}}}

No...DH has gone separately in the car (so DS is on his own in the ambulance ) so I don't want to phone him while he's driving.

I'm still waiting to hear from DH. I think his mobile is switched off.

OK so I've just got hold of DH. They did some tests (don't know what yet) and have given him the all clear. Phew.

He's at the tail end of a cold, and they said that might have made him a bit short of breath. Not entirely convinced by that, but having googled asthma symptoms I don't think that fits either.

Hey ho. I'll guess I'll just keep a watchful eye on him.

Sorry, had to go out...Glad to hear he's fine. Take care, hope you can get some sleep.

zippitippitoes · 01/11/2007 07:08

glad he is ok...you did the right thing though

have a nice day today

onebatmother · 01/11/2007 07:14

that's scary - poor you. both my dc's had bronchiolitis a couple of times, so I know the feeling. I found the symptoms really hard to spot. In the end used to look at their tummies and if they were going in an dout very fast and breathing was fast then I'd take them to A = E. The tests they would have done with your ds would have been checking the oxygen level in his blood with a thingy that clips onto a toe or finger and doesnt' hurt at all. Hope all is well now.

Thanks It helped to be on here last night.

I am soooo hideously tired this morning. Felt too full of adrenaline to get to sleep til about 4am, and DD decided she needed her piece of the action and woke up at 5.30. I got into bed with her and slept fitfully til 7.

And now I have the day from hell. Have to stay in possibly all day for a delivery, and DH won't be back to help put the DCs to bed. Boooo hoooooooo. Woe is me.

On the bright side, DS seems very chirpy and well, and is currently scaling the coffee table again. And again. And again....

Glad he is so much better - it is a shame it was at the expense of a sleepless night for you but at least you can relax a bit today.

I hope you feel OK soon too.
