DD has had a high fever (39) since sunday unless on calpol / neurofen. If we get her a bit late, then it takes an hour / hour and a half for it to drop down to 37.9 or mostly normal. The questio is - should we be worried and also shoudl we be dosing her up in a timely manner before the fever kicks in again and not just waiting for it to appear? I am so loathe to wake her up in the night to give her meds but I hate her waking burning up when she was previously feeling ok when I checked her an hour previously. We then have the very awake hour and a half while we dose her and calm her down and get her back off to sleep again.

What would you do and should we be worried? She's still drinking milk +/- some solids but not much and she seems in good form when the drugs have kicked in. She is very snotty but looks more viral and bacterial (i.e. clear rather than green!)

It's ideal to keep the dosage up, but not really to wake a sleeping child.

If you keep the dosage up, they have a higher level in their bloodstream at all times, rather than always tailing off to zero.

Can you do syringe in the corner of her mouth without disturbing her?

I would probably get her checked out (ears, throat, chest) if using Calpol for longer than 3-4 days...

Just so you can carry on giving her Calpol for another 3-4 days...

God, these fevers go on forever, don't they?!

Hope she's better soon.

She was checked by a Dr on saturday (she was pulling at her ear with a slight fever but it turned out to be 'virus' plus 'eczema' on her ear. Her fever escalated to 39.5 on sunday so we panicked and went to A&E and they checked her chest , urine, ears etc and all clear and said just a virus. On monday she had funny blotches on her arms so i whizzed her in to the GP but they'd gone by the time we got there. She checked her thoroughly again and said all fine 'just a virus'.

I know they can't do anything for a virus. How long do we wait now do you think?

Is it ok to syringe stuff in while she's asleep - won't she choke?

Also - her hands and feet can feel cold even with a fever and DH said she was shivering (or her arms were) just before he dosed her up again (7 hours after the last dose). Is this cause for concern??

How is she doing now?

PutThat, sounds very similar to what my DS has had since Tuesday. Fever that keeps spiking then receding, off his food, snotty/coughy, shivering, cold hands/feet. We rushed him to A&E on Weds night after a rash appeared but they said it was viral.

Anyway we took him to the doc's yesterday who confirmed it's an ear/nose/throat infection, said to carry on with the Calpol/Nurofen and gave us antibiotics, which we haven't started yet but will if he gets poorly again this afternoon (wasn't too bad this morning).

At night-time we give Medised instead of Calpol, helps him get back to sleep more quickly.

She's still spiking so I took her back to the Dr this morning who wasn't very concerned and said that it can take 12 days for a virus to get under control. He gave her some antibios to cover us for the weekend just incase, so if things change to phone the out of hours Dr to have a chat about things and confirm that it's ok to start them. He said it's reasonable to keep dosing her up and then provided that she's still as she is now, just to bring her back in early next week if the fever is still coming back and they will just check everything again. He said sometimes viral can turn in to bacterial, so we will have all bases covered. As long as the calpol etc brings it down, then all is ok.

No fever thank goodness but very chesty and generally a bit pale with a tiny tiny appetite for solids (2-3 mouthfuls today). Enjoying playing but poor muscle strength and generally irritable!
