Resting heart rate over 100?

Cobb121 · 05/02/2021 19:39

I recently bought a pulse oximeter & noticed that my heart rate is consistently 115 bpm at rest. Should I see a doctor?

That's quite high. Do you have high blood pressure as well?

Soon2BeMrs · 05/02/2021 19:48

How old are you, are you fit, I think 60-100 is normal depending on fitness, age etc

Cobb121 · 05/02/2021 22:10

I’m early 30s. I’m about 4 stone over weight 😩 I do walk loads but don’t do any formal exercise. I’m not sure on blood pressure this machine just reads heart rate & oxygen levels.

That is pretty high. Is it your proper resting heart rate? Are you popping the meter on and getting stressed out about the reading?

LongPauseNoAnswer · 05/02/2021 22:14

Are you breathless? Could be anaemia.

If you’re chronically dehydrated it could cause it too.

Soon2BeMrs · 05/02/2021 22:32

Have you had covid? Mine is quite high since having covid

pmac62 · 05/02/2021 22:35

Are you on any medication? Some meds do increase your heart rate.

Princessbanana · 05/02/2021 22:38

Mine is high when my thyroid starts to fuck up! I suffer with an overactive thyroid but it’s intermittent and this is the first sign it’s off again! High heart rate, sweating, pins and needles. This probably isn’t what you have but just watch out for any other symptoms as it took an awful long time for me to actually be diagnosed as it wasn’t a constant thing, maybe once or twice a year but would end in a hospital admission.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/02/2021 01:13

You definitely need to be seen. That's definitely too high for a resting heart rate in an adult.

JengaJanga · 06/02/2021 01:16

For a resting heart rate, thats to fast..

If mine gets to 100 i know im ill.

I went to A& E because i felt poorly and Mine was 120 and i was rushed through to majors and put on a heart machine over night

FromEden · 06/02/2021 01:19

I'm not sure a pulse oximeter can give an accurate resting heart rate. Its just whatever you heart rate is at that particular time. I wear a smart watch and it calculates it based on an entire days worth of readings. Maybe order something like a fitbit or apple/Samsung watch if you have one of their phones. 100 is definitely high, mine is usually between 50-60

Desmondo2016 · 06/02/2021 01:21

I tested out my oximeter the other day and it consistently read my HR in the 80s at the same time that my very expensive Garmin was showing a reading of 50-60. The oximeter also gave me an oxygen sats reading of 75% which is clearly incorrect also. Just sharing this as it's possibly literally down to an inaccurate dodgy device.

JengaJanga · 06/02/2021 01:21

@FromEden

Ofcourse it can. Thats what they are used for

JengaJanga · 06/02/2021 01:22

Make a doctors appointment

Greybeardy · 06/02/2021 10:36

A reproducible, resting pulse over 100 isn’t normal though and you probably should see someone.

Have you actually felt your pulse though and confirmed it’s that high? Sats probes are not always accurate (you can increase/decrease your ‘pulse’ by moving your finger!) and it doesn’t take much to confuse them. They’re generally the first monitor that starts playing up if someone is very sick. If you have a decent looking sats trace then that’s more convincing, but I guess that’s unlikely and you probably just have a number if it’s a shop bought probe. An inaccurate reading doesn’t necessarily mean the device is malfunctioning as described above... the machines are limited by the way they work and you do kind of need to understand how they work to interpret the readings sometimes. Smart watches are even more variable in the numbers they give (mine regularly thinks I’m in extremis!).

dontdisturbmenow · 06/02/2021 15:10

The closest to instant heart rate reading to what is refer to resting heart rate is when you get first wake up before you get up.

My rhr is between 50 and 55 but will be in 60/70 during the day sitting at my desk, in the 90s/100s when I walk gently, 170 when I run. Seating down right now browsing on the internet and it's 64, do your rhr is likely much lower, in the 80s or 90s maybe.

Did you find out why your heart rate was so high? I have this every so often and then it goes back to normal

79andnotout · 07/02/2021 22:58

Get your thyroid checked. Mine was like that when I had an overactive thyroid. It needs checking ASAP.

JengaJanga · 07/02/2021 23:29

@BubblingAlong

Whenever im poorly it always goes over 100.

No idea why, they keep me in hospital afew days till it rights itself
