Goitre with normal TFTs

I have a goitre, not huge but a prominent bulkiness which does seem to increase and reduce over time. Sometimes it makes my neck feel a bit restricted but usually ok, just looks a bit bulky / enlarged.
I've had bloods and an ultrasound scan which are reassuringly normal and spoke to an endocrinologist on phone today who I felt was quite dismissive and seemed to suggest that because tests are normal that the restriction was related to anxiety (I'm pretty certain it isn't). I asked if this bulkiness in the thyroid area (in the absence of abnormal TFTs or scans) was something they ever see and she suggested not.
It certainly looks like a small goitre to me (I saw GP who agreed it was enlarged and referred me to endo).
I just want to know if there's anything I can do to reduce it (other than lose weight - maybe it's just a fat neck!)

I had the same a few years ago. Told me it was probably due to anxiety. I didn’t notice the goitre initially, I went because I permanently have a pressing feeling in my throat. It only bothers me every now and then now, but I do definitely feel it. I was discharged from clinic about 2 years ago. No follow up or anything. I feel quite sad about it.

I have one. And yes, it is possible to have one with normal thyroid levels. Mine are all normal. I was reffered and they offered to remove it. Stupidly I said no, but it has increased in size over the years. As soon as covid calms down I'm going to ask for another referral and have it removed.

Thanks for the replies. I don't understand why a gland would be enlarged for no reason and also why it can enlarge and reduce intermittently, surely something hormonal must be going on?

I’m in exactly the same position. I have a large multi module goitre but bloods are in range. Like you, I don’t understand why I have the goitre?

Do they test your antibodies? I have normal thyroid levels but antibodies attacking the thyroid gland. They don't routinely test for it. My throat feels constrained. You can pay for these tests via Medichecks, which is how I found out.

Me too. The GP who referred me was visibly alarmed when he felt my neck. You can feel my thyroid very clearly.
Bloods and scan normal. The Dr doing the scan was very dismissive. I haven't been back (this was at least 6 years ago). But I have probably put on 3-4 stone since then and was already overweight. Even my xh (tosser) said he didn't understand why I was so fat on what I ate.

I'm sure it hormonal. Unfortunately I have other stuff to worry about over the years and my own health has taken a back seat.

To the pp who said about getting it removed. I'm not sure that's advised! I know a friend who had her removed due to cancer and she's struggling more than ever to regulate her tiredness and weight.

Bandino-but what happens after you pay for checks like that? Does the GP then take you seriously? Is there treatment?

Bandino · 07/02/2021 20:39

They say they'll monitor it, but no so far no treatment. But at least I know why.
