Hi i'm pregnant in my second trimester. In my first trimester I had coffee, one cup a day as I get quite bad caffiene withdrawal and didnt want to be even more sick or de-energised. I am a massive coffee lover and have started having them weaker and weaker as my pregnancy progressed but they barely taste nice anymore. also if im going out with my partner to a coffee drive thru i always struggle with an alternative and hav ended up getting a decaf but Iv heard decaf is quite bad? Can someone give me some similar alternatives? Im struggling to find something thatl give me that nice feeling like coffee did. I really miss it! Thanks.

Is there any reason you can't have a coffee?
As far as I knew the last guidance was you could have 1 or 2 cups a day?

I drank coffee all the way through pregnancy.

As regards drinks in general, browse the supermarket aisle, or online, for ideas.

Rooibos tea. Caffeine free but delicious

MrsPatrickDempsey · 03/02/2021 13:03

Hot squash?
I loved ribena in pregnancy

PattyPan · 03/02/2021 13:06

Mint tea or another herbal/fruit tea e.g. camomile or rooibos as suggested?

Angel2702 · 03/02/2021 13:08

I always had loads of mint and fruit teas when pregnant. The Lidl blackcurrant and liquorice is nice. Morrison’s winter spiced fruit tea is delicious.

merryhouse · 03/02/2021 13:31

I drank redbush (rooibos) all through my pregnancies.

Herbal tisanes like nettle or peppermint - some people like camomile as well.

None of this will help you in a drive-through, though! Perhaps you could start taking your own instead?

Decaf it depends on how it's done - I had a friend years ago who was allergic to decaf because of the chemicals used, but the Swiss-Water-Decaffeinated is produced differently.

I had coffee once a day when I was pregnant and I don't remember it being against the guidelines if in moderation. Also, I can't think about a reason decaf would hurt the baby.
For alternatives I'd say herbal teas or hot chocolate?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/02/2021 13:48

Yes to hot chocolate, and the Lidl peppermint and liquorice. I've also tried the Tea pigs version, and couldn't tell the difference tbh.

A good quality decaf is fine, get ground decaf for a cafeteria - it's lovely

(Or hot chocolate or hot vimto)

AlexaShutUp · 03/02/2021 13:59

I drink normal coffee and decaff. If you buy decent quality coffee (not instant), the decaff is perfectly acceptable. I make mine in a cafetiere.

Yutes · 03/02/2021 14:00

Why is decaf bad?

I’m a herbal tea or hot chocolate fan (chocolate and fizzy juice have caffeine in them too, if that’s your concern)

JemimaTiggywinkle · 03/02/2021 14:01

I’m in my third trimester and having one cup of coffee a day (guidance is up to two a day).

To reduce the amount of coffee I have a smaller coffee at my usual strength, rather than having a really weak normal sized one.

mootymoo · 03/02/2021 14:46

I can't tolerate caffeine, I drink whole bean decaffinated (I buy online as supermarket selection is poor) or red bush tea.

mushroom3 · 03/02/2021 15:10

Caro? You can buy it in Holland and Barratt and elsewhere eg Amazon. It's a coffee alternative made from chicory and rye that you make up with hot water and milk. It's caffeine free. www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/nestle-caro-chicory-rye-drink-60009705?skuid=009705&utm_campaign=shopping&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&&gclid=CjwKCAiAsOmABhAwEiwAEBR0ZuBNkBnNUbYTrshCeuuyzcjqTfiY1hSJohrId98yspIP5sIQ9KqNaRoCuP4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Chai? I’ve got some chai teabags as a quick option - I make 2/3 of a mug of chai with teabag and boiling water, and heat up a bit of milk in the microwave, and once the tea is brewed I add the hot milk. It’s pretty nice, and feels like a good alternative to a latte. I am sure I could make it in a much better way, but this is quick and easy.

toolazytothinkofausername · 03/02/2021 15:23

Milo. You can buy it in Tesco.

minipie · 03/02/2021 15:24

I don’t know what’s on offer at the coffee drive throughs but a few independent coffee shops near me do turmeric lattes which are very nice and kind of healthy!

RavingAnnie · 03/02/2021 15:54

@beth821

Rooibos tea. Caffeine free but delicious
I disagree. Rooibos (or Too Boobs as preferred by spellcheck) is fucking disgusting.
RavingAnnie · 03/02/2021 15:55

I agree with other poster. Like you I love coffee and would struggle to give it up altogether. Have you allotted amount of caffeinated and then switch to decaf. A good decaf coffee is lovely.

lilroo87 · 03/02/2021 15:59

I don't drink instant coffee as I don't like the taste so I have ground coffee which is stronger mg of caffeine which has been a struggle to give up.
I have ordered a variety of decaf ones online as supermarket options are limited and they're not that bad.
I've not heard anything bad about drinking decaf coffee and it will take you a while to adjust to less caffeine but as the recommended is no more than 200mg a day when pregnant it's the best option for me as I do love a bit of chocolate aswell
