I have given her full dose of calpol, for temp and turned off radiator in her room. She is in nappy and vest and under a sheet. I have tried a cough linctus - no improvement. Salbutamol having no real effect. She wouldn't take honey.

The cough sounds throaty and is constant. Took her to GP this am and she said virus. No rash either.

Also what do I do re clothing as temp drops outside? Don't want her to get too cold

Can't give you too much advise on clothing.

But have you tried steam? Get the bath room hot and steamy, run a nice hot bath and sit in there with her. The steam should help with the coughing.

I assume she is on Salbutamol for asthma?

Do you have a hymidifier? You can use this in her bed room, maybe with a couple of drops of olibas oil to help if she gets chesty.

I'll have another think but hope that helps for now and she starts to feel better very soon

Oh how old is DD?

drosophila · 30/10/2007 21:25

She is 3 in Jan. i think she is asleep now. I was given Salbutmal becasue my DS is asthmatic and I expressed concern once that DD might be. I was told I was a better judge than the gp. Not sure if that is a good thing or not.

Would the steam help with a throaty cough?

No not asleep. She is calling me. I don't know how she is going to get any sleep with that cough.

It worth a shot!

Normally really helpful with chesty coughs but it will probably help ease a throaty cough.

If you think about the throat is dry and irritated to be causing the cough. The steam will help ease the irritation.

You would need to sit in the steam for atleast 10 mins. Its got to be worth a try its pretty much free and it sounds like she is very miserable at the moment.

Another vote for steam...worth a try, definitely. Otherwise, all you can do is prop her up on pillows, keep her as relaxed as possible, and if you have Medised in the house try that next time the Calpol is due? If the cough is partly from post nasal drip, it does help a bit.

There are some mean cough viruses around atm. Hope she's beter soon!

Dreadful night. Took her to bathroom with intention of trying steam but she cried to go back to bed. Will try medised.

I think post nasal drip is deffo a goer. She vomited a cople of times with the effort of coughing.
