Hello - FTM here to a five week old boy looking for reassurance from other mamas

Our LO’s had no health issues whatsoever, he’s been gaining weight and growing as expected, however last week he started throwing up. He threw up twice two days in a row - quite forceful vomit through mouth and nose, not projectile vomiting, but not spitting up. We panicked the first time around, rang 111, spoke to nurses and GPs and nobody seemed concerned

He feeds well (EBF), has 10-12 wet nappies a day (clear and odourless urine), sleeps well and is active and alert when he’s up

He was fine for a couple of days and now it’s happening again - once a day for the last three days he vomits either fresh milk or curdled milk. He doesn’t cry or seem bothered by it, he doesn’t have fever or any other symptoms and he feeds normally afterwards. Quantity wise, it probably looks more than it is - he’s soaked, but it can’t be more than 50 ml each time

I feed him slightly upright, we burp him and keep him upright after feeds and it still happens

I was told this is a laundry issue, not a health one - have your babes had something similar? If so, when and how did it go away? Is it just his digestive system needing to mature? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thank you
Diana x

Sounds pretty normal for a newborn, my DD3 is nearby 5 weeks and she probably does it a couple times a week, I just presume she ate too much! If he starts doing it every feed and is grumpy, bringing his legs up then it may be reflux but otherwise I'd not worry. Just have a muslin on hand after feeds!

My dd was like this, I remember it was really stressful as it would be over her clothes, my clothes, the bed sheets etc. She breastfed and I'm pretty sure it was when she'd had a little bit too much. She did grow out of it. I tried to pause the feed when she'd had a fair amount and go back to it a few minutes later if she wanted to just to give her a chance to register she was full up.

You can get disposable waterproof mats that are designed to help stop wee accidents in older children, you could put one underneath him to help catch it if you suspect he might vomit.

He'll get there, it's one of those things that's really hard at the time but will be a vague distant memory before you know it, this stage will pass.

At 5 weeks his stomach is the size of a large walnut.
It sounds like he is posseting. Just bringing up extra. Especially if your supply is good he will drink a bit too much and bring up the excess.

It spreads well. So it probably isn't that much.

Congratulations on your little boy.

Thank you all!

It’s still difficult to watch him go through it. He’s been feeding more today and ended up throwing up bile as well :(

He doesn’t seem bothered still.

My daughter started throwing up a LOT at 2 weeks and it didn't ease until 14 weeks when we realised she was CMPA and swopped from breast feeding to prescription formula. Was literally like a miracle cure and totally changed my enjoyment and stress levels! We first realised when I gave a bottle of aptamil and she broke out in hives, I then tracked and realised when I went low or no dairy she was much better and at 14 weeks just decided I'd done my bit, dairy free wasn't for me so I put her on the formula. Best decision I made for all of us.

You still need to call your GP for advice as he could become dehydrated from being sick so much

If he's having plenty of wet nappies I won't be worrying.
My baby was like that I would

When was his weight last checked? As far as I can remember 5 weeks is still in the window for pyloric stenosis to develop. DS2 developed it at around 2 weeks, but a quick google says 2-12weeks. He projectile vomited after most feeds as the valve at the bottom of the stomach thickens and so not much can get through - meaning it has to come up the other way. He seemed alert and nappies seemed ok so I was t too worried at first, but his fontanelle slowly sank in and by the time I could get a dr to take me seriously he was quite dehydrated. The projectile vomiting is a classic sign - posseting is not projectile and it’s not everything in the stomach coming up. If you are concerned go to the gp and ask them to check, although be aware that they can’t always diagnose without a blood test. A number of drs checked DS2 and said he was fine, but then they did a blood test just to be sure and it came back showing the dehydration.

Thank you all!

We had nearly a week of no incidents, and this past week he threw up every three days (once a day, not after every feed). There doesn’t seem to be a pattern at all, he has days when he burps fine after every feed and it still happens, and days when we cannot get any burps out of him but he brings up curdled milk shot half way across the room

We had our seven week HV check up yesterday and he jumped from the 50th percentile (at his two week check up) to the 75th for weight, and maintained his 91st percentile for height. He seems to be doing perfectly aside from these off days

The GPs dismissed it but I took a photo of the last load he brought up and and showed it to the HV. She got worried at the quantity, so I’ll be showing the photos at our GP check up next week. But then she checked his weight and fontanelle and said she was very pleased at his growth and progress

I’m attaching the photos I’ll be showing to the GP. LO is all smiles a minute after he does this but I’m hoping the GP will be able to advise - it still doesn’t feel right to me and it’s hard seeing him go through this

Thank you all again for the messages!
