DD has been doing really pale poos for about 7 weeks now. It started about a week after she possibly ate a small aamount of silica gel (she found and managed to open one). When the silica gel incident happened I called NHS Direct and they said not to worry. I'm not sure if the silica gel consumption is related but I thought I'd add it in.

She has had her bloods done (FBC, liver funtion, glucose and U&E's). All came back normal.

For a brief while they seemed to start to revert back to normal but I've noticed that they're back to the same pale colour - like v. pale sand - over the past few days.

She seems very well in herself, although she frequently complains of tummy aches (which seem to be minor and / or shortlived). She also has something that looks a bit like a cross between mild acne and eczema on her face.

So in light of the fact that the poo has gone pale again should I be seeking to find a cause, or just leave it? I'm really worried that there's something up with her billary system / liver.

Bump - think I'm going to see the GP but I reckon they'll fob me off because she seems so well. Any advice on how to get them to take me seriously? I'm always so grateful when they say nothing's wrong that I'm eaily fobbable off. Or fob offable. You get the gist...

Hi Pennies
Not a GP I am afraid but I remember you posting about this before as my dd had same symptoms.
When she is a little under the weather it does tend to recur and she also suffers on and off from strange skin rashes - I am not worried as she is generally so well and has plenty of energy. I do wonder if my dd has a food allergy/intolerance though and have been thinking of eliminating dairy for a while ( as I have a dairy intolerance and it aggravates my skin and bowels ( - sorry if tmi)

Are the poos white?

I had thought they needed to be checked out as it could be a sign of something else.

If I were you I would got to your GP and request liver function tests again.

IMO, even if it isn't something serious, it isn't 'normal' and needs to be investigated.

Is she drinking more milk / havin more dairy as this can change the colour of poo - dd had this when she was younger.

macdoodle · 31/10/2007 15:34

I would take you seriously even in well child - is she losing weight - could be malabsorption for one and probably needs referral to a paediatric gastroeneterologist .how old is she??

Pennies · 31/10/2007 17:43

She's just 3.

No noticeable weight loss, but I'll weigh her again tonight. No apparent bloating or excess wind and her growth is normal.

Her poos are a very light tan colour - quite yellow. They were a bit white at one point but seem to have gone to this colour now.

Re. dairy she is a bit of a milk-aholic and has three large cups of it a day. That means she's having abut 700 - 800mls a day (!), not including her daily porridge, plus any cheese / yoghurts, so that's quite a lot isn't it. This has only been since she started school because she now has a small carton of milk - I suppose about a 3rd of a pint - at break time and this co-incides with the start of this whole episode. That's certainly food for thought.
