Kneeling Chair

Struggling right now and historically with lower back pain. My job is becoming evermore desk based, thinking of purchasing a kneeling chair. Looking for any thoughts or recommendations?

I have the Varier kneeling chair which I really like, and it also lets me fidget happily which is a plus for me as I hate sitting with my feet flat on the floor

LunaHeather · 28/01/2021 19:34

I'm sorry, OP i have no suggestions but I am curious about this too

But one of my concerns os that I am only 5ft so I have a feeling these won't suit as I won't be able to sit at the correct height.

wetwiped · 28/01/2021 20:07

Thanks I'll have a look at that one CMO.

The ones I've looked at range from £29.99 on eBay to over £100 and I really don't want it to be another fad which ends up at a car boot in a couple of years.

I do need to try something different though as my back cannot take sitting for any length of time without playing up.

It is pricey, but I've been sitting on it for years, and is just as lovely as ever. The rocking means I am mobilising my back and engaging my core which helps as well. There are very similar ones on ebay for £50 which would give you an idea as to whether it suits you though. You might prefer trying a sit/stand desk arrangement

If you’re in Kent op I’ve one I’m looking to get rid of...

Dora26 · 28/01/2021 20:49

I can’t recommend yoga enough - I don’t have backache at all now - unless I skip a couple of classes!

ButterMeUpScotty · 28/01/2021 20:57

What do these chairs do? My back is sore with all this working from home at the dining table crap.

wetwiped · 28/01/2021 21:14

Butter Tried to attach photo, hope it works.
Mind unfortunately not. Nothing local on eBay either sadly. Did you not rate yours?

I do usually love yoga but classes all on line right now, with our house being open plan and everyone wfh there is no space, or peace and quiet, to roll my mat out. Sad

Yoga is excellent....there must be somewhere for your mat?

I actually had a colleague who would lie on the floor in my tiny office to stretch her back out, even a five minute stretch helps.

wetwiped · 28/01/2021 22:49

Oh yes, I ve been doing a few stretches each day, I was thinking more of zone out for a while yoga that happens in a class environment. Definitely still helps.

Work in an nhs clinic based setting and have bad back pain (not from my job). One of our podiatrists suggested I try out one of their saddle stools, and omg, it is incredible. Might be worth looking at these too.

wetwiped · 28/01/2021 22:53

Oh thanks crazy for the tip, I'll check those out too

I have a colleague who uses a saddle stool and swears by it.

I tried a kneeling chair and OMG the pain. After 20 minutes my knees were killing me. Got saddle using colleague to try it and he agreed it was shit.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/01/2021 22:59

Oh how funny! I was about to recommend a bambach saddle seat. They really are not at all cheap, but teen DS' chair has been going nearly 10 years. We had it for multiple reasons but not least because it promotes active sitting which strengthens your stomach muscles. And it really does work.

Pilates is better than yoga. (Hides before I get lynched). You want anything that focusses on strengthening the core the take the pressure off the back. Yoga will do that indirectly but it primarily hits flexibility and relaxation. Pilates goes straight for the core.

LastStarFighter · 28/01/2021 23:01

I had a kneeling chair and didn’t get on with it. It actually made my posture much worse, and hurt my knees.

Sitting on a yoga ball works well though.

maggiso · 28/01/2021 23:44

I have a kneeling stool which helps with my lower back pain. The change in hip position is helpful for me but may not suit others. The issue I have with it since I also have an upper back issue is my upper back gets sore, because there is no back rest. The other issue is the seat height is not adjustable so if I was buying again I would look at a chair not a stool and something with adjustable seat and knee heights.

maggiso · 28/01/2021 23:59

Luna - I have the Balan Varia and am an inch taller than you. The seat is a bit low for me. I have to shifty my bottom up on the stool and rock forwards sometimes. There is a much more costly adjustable version! I have wondered about making thicker pads for the knee and seat cushions to raise the height slightly!

Barmbraic · 29/01/2021 00:08

I've had my kneeling chair 15 years. It takes a while to get used to the pressure on your shins and knees but I find it very good. I don't sit perfectly all the time but I sit better most of the time.

Back in Action has a range of chairs and very helpful customer service. I like my Humantool Saddle seat adapter as it can be put on any chair and improves posture.

MarinPrime · 13/03/2021 15:21

Sitting in office chair for more than half an hour always gave me bad backpain, no matter how many I tried or how I adjusted them.
So finally bought this saddle stool and really love it. I was told my back might be more painful for a few days while I got used to it, which it was, then all my back pain stopped.
