Can someone look at this "list" and tell me this is IBS and not something horrible and terminal...

So, have had a slightly funny tummy for a few weeks - nothing major, just a bit looser than normal for me.
3 weeks ago got a bit worse and started to feel nauseous, and bloating a lot of the time. Pain is stomach rather than gut iyswim.
The last 5 days or so, weirdly dramatic increase in symptoms, look about 6 months pg., feel sick pretty much all the time, passing wind what feels like constantly (but can't be, because I've made it to work).. and passing mucus-y stuff when no poo left.

If you've made it this far you're my new best friend and know more about me than my DH, so thank you.

Have an appt. with the doc, but DM is panicking me with tales of Ov. CA and so on...I vow now never to do that to my child!

Cheers,

J

Have you had IBS before? What has changed that has brought on these symptoms?

This could be IBS, but the degree of change sounds a bit worrisome.

GooseyLoosey · 30/10/2007 11:45

Good you are going to see the Dr. It could really be anything at all - there are lots of things that cause stomach type symptoms and most of them are not life threatening.

I am not a Dr but am assuming that your mother is not either. Ignore what she says - the odds are in your favour. Stop worrying - you can do nothing more than you have done.

Let us know if you are OK.

Jackaroo · 30/10/2007 11:49

I had IBS about 17/18 years ago during my Finals - but I don't remember what it was like, certainly not like this. TBH, I had been assuming this, because we're in the middle of a big move; but I have moved many times before, faced all sorts of horrible/ stressful events and never had a tummy reaction to it...... but I wonder if this is one too many lol!

Yer not 'elping there Cockney - "a bit worrisome" eh???

i tcould be your thyroid
1 in 50 women have hypothyroidism

one of the most common symptoms is a slow gut, bloating, sick. because the thyroid is not workng properly the body slows down, yu feel tired adn bloated etc

its very easy to diagnose and fix - simple blood test then a tiny pill (for rest of life though)

im not saying it is that but it could be

hop eyou are ok x

Ah, well there you are Goosey, my mum was a nurse for decades and has very good knowledge (unfortunately) of the path of many different unpleasant things... I know sometimes she wishes she didn't know either.

It could be Crohns or Colitis, I have colitis and this is how it started, make sure the doc looks into this as mine left it for weeks and ended up quite ill with it.

Jackaroo · 30/10/2007 11:59

Forgot to mention, more exhausted that usual I think. Obviously it's a way of life for mummies, but no choice but to go to bed before 9pm if I want to function at all these days....

Thanks nailpolish - and Mrs N, all useful ideas.

Yes...it could be IBS I had it bad for a while when I had a stressful job and I was so worried I used to get the mucus nad bloated tum with pain sometimes the runs and sometime constipation...I had numerous investigations and was told it was IBS...funnily enough after I had my dds it disappeared Yay!...don't worry too much get yourself to the GP and have it checked for your peace of mind hun

LittleGoldfish · 30/10/2007 12:08

Sounds like ibs - I get the mucus stuff you described and all the other symptoms. Stress brings it on for me and I am easily stressed unfortunately.

After numerous tests i.e. Colonoscopy & endoscopy they told me they couldn't find anything wrong so have put it done to ibs.

I am sure your GP will sort you out and maybe refer you to specialist.

What time is your appt? Is it today?

Jackaroo · 30/10/2007 12:12

OK, well sounds like IBS to me too, so that's my verdict! Seeing doctor after work today, so only a few hours to go - I'm sure she'll come up with some ways to deal with it. Thing is, we're flying in about 6 weeks, so I don't think I'll get any appt.s done even if they're offered.

If she's really concerned I'll wait til I get to my parents and get them done privately whilst we're with them.

Thanks everyone.. has helped just chewing it over with others, rather than have it spin around in my head...

I have this too, exactly the same!

Have been told it's IBS.

Jackaroo · 30/10/2007 15:09

Thanks LG and Emma - what do you do to fix it/make it more controlled? I'm finding it hard to concentrate at work, the pain is making my eyes cross (but I haven't lost my sense of humour )
I seem to remember taking peppermint oil many yaers ago.... I'd rather not take anything prescription if you've any other tips.

You can get colpermin over the counter, but best to be diagnosed first. If its IBS then you need to try to work out the trigger. With me its alcohol or tiredness - so need drastic change of lifestyle!!!!

DettaJnr · 30/10/2007 17:54

It could be something like coeliac disease. The symptoms sound similar. It often goes undiagnosed or diagnosed as IBS. It's an intolerance to wheat and flour.

Hope it goes well with your doctor. Make sure that you are sent for testing and not just given medication.

MaureenMLove · 30/10/2007 18:02

Just what I was going to say Detta, don't let the doctor just give you pills and send you away. DH was diagnosed/fobbed off with IBS over 8 years ago and he was always suffering very badly. In the end he demanded he was sent for tests. There was something else, not life threatening and subsequently put right, but he suffered unnecessarily for 8 years. Good luck.
