Do fillings hurt?

I've experienced toothache for a couple of days now and woke up with awful ear ache this morning. I've had a good look and have found a black dot on my tooth at the very back. I'm booked to see a dentist on Thursday but I'm pretty sure I'm going to need a filling and this will be my very first one! I'm terrified Sad Does it hurt? How long does it take?

No. Root canal hurts. Ask for an injection if you are worried.

Suzi888 · 25/01/2021 21:21

No, I’ve always had something to numb the gum and an injection. I’ve had two, had them removed and new ones done. You’ll be fine!

NannyR · 25/01/2021 21:24

No, fillings don't hurt. The injection is pretty uncomfortable for a few seconds but then it's completely numb. I've had several root canals done and never had any pain with them either.

Root canal only hurts if you don't have enough anaesthetic or if it's done too soon after the injection. Having it at my dentist is painless during the procedure.

Not at all. Anasthetic is your friend!

Root canals don't hurt either, it's just uncomfortable because it takes longer.

Fillings don’t hurt as much as tooth ache. They will give you an injection which will numb the area. They will drill the tooth first which can be a bit unnerving but mainly because of the vibrations and the feeling that they’re about to hit a nerve. It’s not actually painful. I’ve had root canal treatment too and it’s longer but not painful ( I had to have the same tooth done twice ). Usually they will tell you to raise your hand if you feel any pain so they’re well versed in nervous patients. Good luck - I’m sure it will be fine.

Make sure you tell the dentist that you are nervous and want all the anaesthetic going.

My friend was always surprised that my experience (gums numbed before injection, short wait til anaesthetic takes effect, top up on long jobs like crowns.) was so different to her own.

She finally asked her dentist why he didn't offer these aids and was surprised when his reply was that she didn't complain about not having them so he assumed she didn't want them.

Ask for everything going and it really will be painless. Oh, and my lovely dentist also told me you can feel pain when breathing out, I think to distract me but it really works. 😀

I get very nervous about anything medical and pain! I've one filling and it honestly didn't hurt. The injection stings for a few seconds.. and that is as bad as it gets. It's fine!

Bargebill19 · 25/01/2021 21:39

I take a ibroprufen beforehand - lessens the jaw ache (I have a small jaw) associated with trying to keep your mouth open.
If you are nervous talk to the dentist about what’s going to happen. I agree certain hand signals - do thumbs up for ok, a flat upright hand for stop. I find that squeezing a stress ball really help distract my mind.
Dh falls asleep during any dental procedure!

Eloisedublin123 · 25/01/2021 22:26

Nothing hurts anymore!! All very sophisticated these days

IHTC · 25/01/2021 22:27

Thanks all. It helps to hear positive accounts when you're as much of a wimp as I am!

@bargebill19 thank you. I have a smaller than average mouth too, they always struggle to take xrays and more or less have to ram their equipment in. I'll definitely take Ibuprofen!

With gum and needle no without agony I had a butcher as a child the fear I had for years today I tell every dentist and they put plenty of gum stuff on before they start even more local if they think it’s required.

mrstea301 · 25/01/2021 22:40

Fillings don't hurt, it's more the anticipation and the noise that's the issue - my sisters dentist has let her listen to music before because it's the noise that really bothers her!

I've had fillings done without anaesthetic before, if it wasn't a big one. I hate feeling numb and dribbly for hours afterwards. My dentist is a friend of mine tho and I trust him to stop immediately if I ask and give me an injection if I change my mind! But it's definitely miles better than the toothache!

EspressoExpresso · 25/01/2021 22:40

Shouldn't do. They'll inject a local anaesthetic into your gum then test whether you can feel their pokey thing before they get going. I've had a lot of dental work recently including a couple of fillings and 4x wisdom teeth out just under local. Most painful bit when the anaesthetic wore off was the injection site on the gum!

NeverEscaping · 25/01/2021 22:46

No, they don't hurt. I've had 13 fillings, two root canals and one extraction. I'm only 25! But they were all fine. I had a massive fear of the dentist and I was petrified but honestly, it really is fine. Toothache is painful! Fillings, root canals and extractions aren't painful provided they use enough anesthetic. Once, they didn't quite use enough, I just held my hand up, and the dentist stopped straight away and topped the anesthetic up for me and all was good! You'll probably feel a sharp scratch with the numbing injection but that's it. Having a filling really is preferable to toothache and afterwards it's actually a relief knowing that you won't experience any more toothache! No pain afterwards. Good luck!
