I accidentally put my finger in a hand blender

I know Confused

In my defence I was very tired and on cocodemol after suffering with a case of a very nasty UTI at the time. I was making a cake trying to keep my mind off the pain, and I stuck my finger in the blade to try and get some dates out and my other hand automatically pressed the high blend button after a very unfortunate brain malfunction. Blood all over kitchen and a trip to hospital.

This was back in August and I am still suffering with nerve damage and pain now at the tip - but otherwise externally it’s healed well, just a small scar and it’s still swollen slightly. They thought at the time that I had just missed my nerves (it was completely numb 2/3rds of the way up when they was cleaning it up). It’s my index finger on my left hand.

However 5 months later and I’m still having trouble with it. It’s still very tingly and I can’t put any pressure on it. I can just about run it very lightly across a surface (with an extreme sensitivity/Sickly numbness to it). At the back of the finger, if I run my finger down it just below the nail bed it’s very sore and feels bruised. Most activities I have to avoid using my finger but I’m used to this now so it doesn’t bother me. I am hoping to get in to climbing though this year and I was hoping to use it Sad

Should it be this troublesome this far on? Is this abnormal? I think it’s pretty clear now I must have caught a nerve unlike they initially said.

Ouch, i am wincing reading this and wondering if you were able to rescue the cake???

Seriously though, it might be worth checking with your gp or the specialist that you saw. It sounds like a really nasty injury so maybe it will take time, its worth checking to see if anything needs doing

Iris3456 · 25/01/2021 14:17

I pretty much sliced the top part of my index finger off once, half way to the centre of the finger/bone. Absolutely no sensation for first few months and not much for 2-3 years. Slowly regained and now 80% feeling back in it, so surprised. Beautiful scar still there though and amazing fingerprint, like it's stitched a new one over the scar! No burglary career for me!

TheBadElfParade · 25/01/2021 14:34

I was able to save the cake but it turned out shit so it wasn’t worth hacking in to my finger really.

Ouch @Iris3456! 2-3 years Shock the body is amazing but it takes a very long time doesn’t it!

Did you have much pain for a while? I wasn’t expecting miracles with recovery but I’m concerned about the pain this far down the line

I’ve just inspected mine and my finger print is growing over my scar too, I hadn’t noticed before now @Iris3456 that’s quite cool!

I spiralised my thumb last summer and basically removed my knuckle flesh all bar a sliver.
So I stuck it back down and applied a plaster got through a whole box before the bleeding stopped
It's also healed well, but is completely numb.

I also chopped my left index finger down to the bone some years ago, and I reckon it took about 2 years before it was anywhere near normal again.

Iris3456 · 25/01/2021 14:50

Oh the pain went on for months - decreasing though, then like @KatherineOfAragon a buzz/throb (forgot about that) for a while and like a strange itchy sensation.

Then numbness, now pretty good. To be thankful, I was so happy not to have lost the finger - thought it was a gonner for sure!

TheBadElfParade · 25/01/2021 14:56

@KatherineOfAragon

I honestly never realise did get so many responses with people doing similar, it would be funny if it wasn’t so grim.
It’s exactly that! The sickly feeling. And electric!! Apart from that can you put pressure on it now without pain?

I suppose it sounds pretty normal For such an injury and something I’m going to have to Just accept aren’t I Sad

I chopped the tip of my index finger off (on the diagonal half way down one side of the nail) 20 years ago.
I couldn't type with it for about 5 years until the strange nerve sensation started to lessen.
It still feels different, extra sensitive and tingly and is painful if jabbed.

Why did I open this threadShockShockShock

Emina1995 · 11/06/2021 10:43

I am so sorry. I am actually coming through something very similar. My one is quite serious, see here:

It is still not ok. :(

You do know that a hand blender isnt actually for shredding your handWink

Then why is it called a hand blender. Should carry a warning on the packaging. So what would you need to blend your hand?
SoupDragon · 11/06/2021 15:45

I've done it too. I came off very lightly with just a small scar. So. so lucky. Removing the blade without turning it off at the mains is not a mistake I have made a second time.

lovablequalities · 11/06/2021 15:52

I did this with a stick blender 20 years ago. Finger is still very sensitive and tingly and often very painful.

I didn't realise how many people have done this!

MrsRussell · 11/06/2021 15:53

I was putting a new metal collar on a tent pole (one of the big wooden poles that goes with canvas tents) and my hand slipped.
Still remember walking up the garden path to my then OH, across the kitchen, and up the stairs to the bathroom leaving a trail of blood behind me. My thumb still twitches randomly if it gets overused and it looks like someone's applying shock therapy to the heel of my hand.

That said, it was a bank holiday weekend, neither J nor I could drive, and I CBA to go and wait around in A and E with it, so it was never stitched. That probably makes a diffrence!

Emina1995 · 13/06/2021 17:30

@SoupDragon @lovablequalities me also. I took my fingertip and fingerpad of my dominant index finger completely off and shattered the bone Shock. Five months later, it is still extremely painful and will never function as before :(

lovablequalities · 13/06/2021 19:31

I have found my people!

DH sliced the side of his finger off a few years ago, was replaced with plastic surgery and you can't even see the difference but he says the area is numb but he can use the finger for every day use

Emina1995 · 18/10/2021 16:29

I am now some 9 months and something after the injury. The impairment is permanent Sad I have very limited movement in my pip joint on that finger, the second joint is fused because of the bone damage. I cannot make a fist. I have no feeling in the nub and it is hurting when under pressure. I am doing my physio since beginnings of July and still in the process. Taking care about a toddler with bandaged, splinted or casted right hand was a real life experience Wink

Hello. I accidentally cut my finger with a blender, they sewed my finger with 5 threads. Exactly on the soft part of the finger "pillow". It's been 3 months, there is only a scar, but also a swelling. Is it normal? I don't know where I can attach a photo

olivia33 · 05/01/2022 21:44

Twillow · 05/01/2022 21:57

I had a very deep cut on the tip of the index finger, though nowhere near such a nasty injury as yours. It was 10 years ago and I had the horrible mix of numbness and sick sensations for about 5 years. It still surprises me that it feels normal now when I touch something. I hope it gradually improves for you too.
