Teen DD has blood clots in urine, but no sign of infection. What could it be?

For a few weeks my teen DD has had lower pelvic pain.

We spoke to the doctors who advised to keep an eye on it. Last week she started getting clots of blood in her urine.m and some flank pain to one side. So called the doctors, who told us to come in. They checked her urine with a dipstick and no sign of infection, just blood.

They felt her stomach and no signs of lumps and my daughter felt no pain when she was examined.

They prescribed antibiotics anyway and the pain has gone, but the blood is still there, despite just finishing her 3 day course.

Could it still be a UTI? What on earth could it be?

insist on a referral right now - needs a proper investigation.

partyatthepalace. Thanks for the reply. Yea, I intend to follow it up with the GP this week.

Yes, definitely a referral is needed. I wouldn’t be happy with that

It probably is a uti. Do you have an urgent care center nearby? If so take her there asap.

Did they send the urine off and did you get the results back? She might need different antibiotics.

Haematuria is really common, so do try not to worry. I think a follow up urine test would be called for, but there's really not a significant likelihood of anything serious. I don't suppose, by any chance, that she has been taking pain killers for the pain? Because those can actually exacerbate it. But it sounds like there may have been a kidney infection (the pain is common), and the symptoms of that can take a little time to settle as the kidney is still flushing the system.

23451A-yes, they sent off a sample of her urine, they should get the results Mon/Tues.

Moondust001-No, she isn’t taking any pain relief for it. I didn’t know some could exacerbate it, so will make sure we avoid those. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.

Urgent referrals are months behind due to Covid.

I wonder if she had a kidney stone which passed when she hd the loin pain. If there's small amounts of trauma that would explsin why there's still blood. Blood in the toilet always looks like there's more than there actually is though.

Is the blood more red or pink?

Urgent referrals are not months behind - I was referred to the oral health department at my local hospital a week ago (Norfolk and Norwich) because of cancer worries over my tonsils / mouth and I already have an appointment for next week. It seems different in different areas but please do not be put off pushing for an urgent referral because some posters think they’re not happening.

I have lupus and frequently have blood in my urine. Many things can cause it and recurrent UTIs sometimes need a long course of antibiotics but yes you definitely need a referral to a urologist. I am 40 now and I have been on daily antibiotics for recurrent urine infections and blood in my urine since I was 14 - generally they keep it under control but if I get an infection I just up the dose.
