Tongue too big for mouth while sleeping? Am I the only one?

I've always had this. My tongue is too big when I sleep and often gets bitten a little as I'm dropping off. I thought this happened to everyone but my husband tells me this isn't normal! I don't have any speech impediments or anything and while awake I have no issues with my tongue. It's only when my tongue relaxes/flattens out during sleep. It can be a bit annoying especially when I'm preparing to sleep and I can't find a non-bitey position for my tongue. Anyone else have this?

Maybe you are grinding your teeth? When I used to grind mine I would bite my tongue as I was falling asleep- my teeth sort of clamped together as the grinding started.

Might you be a bit dehydrated?

I've not experienced this, but could you maybe try some kind of tooth guard? I'm thinking of the 'trays' that tooth whitening comes in. Dentists seem to recommend sleeping in them now and they're quite comfy Thanks
