My mouth suddenly doesn’t fit together ??

Unsure how to explain this one, it’s been going on about 6 months but everyone in my life I’ve told laughs and thinks I’m crazy.

Basically my teeth / mouth / jaw just don’t comfily slot together anymore. It’s hard to explain, but I can’t just have my mouth shut without pressing all my teeth together

I get headaches all the time now and my jaw is constantly locked because I just have to keep my jaw all tense to keep my teeth together.

I can see that my bottom teeth are starting to move out of place a bit, not the top ones, but obviously this is far from ideal

It’s completely better if I’m eating of chewing gum but nothing else helps. I’ve started chewing the inside of my cheek a lot just to get some relief for my jaw and temples

Does anyone have a clue what this could be ?

@Nets888

I realised my bite is off too. It started in August when I noticed my teeth were clenched together. Soon after I have this chronic niggling toothache which has now spread to my front bottom teeth. I'm hoping to get a mouthguard.

Could you be clenching your teeth at night?

Yes, I think possibly this is it. When I was a child apparently I’d always grind my teeth in my sleep if I was going to be ill the next day so possibly lockdown stress or something is causing that now

Cringing at all the people saying “TMJ” - everyone has a “TMJ” as that’s just an abbreviation for the temporomandibular joint itself. It’s TMD for the disorder.

This sounds like textbook TMD, OP. I’m surprised it wasn’t the first result from a search online.

The treatments are anti inflammatories, massaging, soft food diet, mouth splints & general stress relief. Botox is a last resort.

StormBaby · 23/01/2021 23:35

I have Tmj it’s incredibly common so it’s probably just that. It can be something slightly more scary, but treatable also, a benign pituitary gland growth, so please do get properly checked out.

TMD/stress and anxiety - I always become hyper aware of this when I am feeling very tense. It’s weird- you have my sympathies

Nets888 · 25/01/2021 14:23

@ineedaholidaynow, what do you mean by wobbly? Do they feel like they have this weird sensation? It's hard to describe mine but my teeth feel weird, sometimes they feel tight, sometimes they feel like popping.

Can I jump on this thread for support too? I can identify with all that has been said!

I have a tooth that is constantly painful as a result of clenching. My dentist has altered my mouth guard and bite several times to try and sort it, but it still hurts every day to some degree. It really has been miserable. I had the tooth next to extracted a year and a half ago, due to a mystifying ongoing pain that my dentist couldn’t sort. I now realise in hindsight that the pain was also due to clenching, and am gutted I had it out.

I have tried numerous expensive things over the last year, including Botox, bite adjustments and counselling (to try and bottom out the stress!).
My tooth still hurts, and my bite feels awful.

Currently seeing a chiropractor.

I have a soft mouth guard that has been adjusted to take account of my uneven bite, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. Interested to hear other people’s experiences of different mouth guard styles.

I just went to the dentist and they told me it was TMJ ? Oh well, what ever it is I’m happy to know and start getting it sorted :)

Sorry to resurrect a zombie thread but I’m having this issue, though it seems to be the opposite of most ppl in that I’m not clenching them during the night but during the day when I’m stressed . My teeth feel normal in the morning after I’ve been asleep so I’m guessing as my body relaxes during sleep it’s easing off, then as soon as I’m awake I can feel my bite changing. I’m really making a conscious effort not to jaw clench at the moment but im worried ive done some permanent damage .
