high temp but no other symptoms?

DD2 (3.5) has had a temp of about 39 on and off for the past four days. When she has it she is lethargic, not her-self etc. but calpol seems to sort her out. Then she's fine for the rest of the day. She doesn't seem to have any other symptoms, cold, cough, and when I ask her she say that nothing is hurting just that she is tired. She is eating OK but less than normal. I;ve asked if she has tummy-ache or if her wee hurts - none of these.

Any ideas what this could be?

This has happened to my son a few times. Upon taking him to our GP, he normally listens to his chest and diagnose a chest infection, when listening on his back. No cough, no cold, only temperature. I would lake her to the doctor.

I would take her to GP if not better in a day or so....but it does sound very like what my dd (same age) had in the summer. She had no symptoms other than a temp, up to 40 at night, down in the morning, up and down during the day. I double dosed her with calpol/nurofen alternately, and gave her lots of watered down juice, water, milk etc.

The GP (I took her on the 4th day) said it was very probably viral, as temp up and down, and she was playing and happy when temp down.

Hopefully she'll start having normal temps tomorrow, they usually last about five days if its a virus!

Meant to add - GP said that usually, if its an infection, temp stays up more or less all the time, and child is more lethargic/unwell. But I agree with Scary, worth checking with GP unless she is better very soon.

DH is taking her to the docs this pm. I thought it would be good to let her look in ears, listen to chest etc..

I guess when the temp is down they feel OK and when it's high they feel pretty horrid. I'll keep up with the calpol/nurofen.

Did your ds have antibios Scary?

It wil just be their immune system fighting some kind of infection/virus/bug.

Just keep an eye out for symptoms and let them get on with it. Kids are good at not lying down to these things and just getting on with it. (Unlike us adults!)

If it persists then see the docs. It might be something like an ear infection that may not have obvious symptoms.

I thought that...dd2 is very stoic (unlike dd1).

Cardy, my sons temperature would also fluctuate, 37,3 (with calpol), 39 without. Around 39 he would usually be lethargic, and appear unwell, and with calpol much brighter.
And yes, he has usually been given antibiotics.

Sounds very similiar - it seemed unusual as there were none of the usual cold/virus symptoms.

My Dd had this a few weeks ago,it started with a headache at school and they sent her home.

Gave her nurofen but that evening and for the next 2-3 days she had a high temp and no energy but no other symptoms.

Thanks all. At least with a cold virus you can 'see' it.
