Y9 Booster for DTP and Men ACY - any HCP about please?

My Y9 has been offered the 'booster' for DTP that she had the first shot of last year just before lockdown. Plus a shot of Men ACY.
I am not anti-vax at all, both my kids have had all UK vacs as scheduled.

BUT.. she has Autism and was very upset (not at school but after) by this injection before. Is there any way for her to have receive this that is not by injection please as I think she will simply refuse if she remembers the fear / pain of last time.
Not just a case of CBT / positive thinking on my / her part, we are WAY beyond that...

It can only be given as an injection unfortunately. She needs 5 DTP in her lifetime, and the fifth should be at least five years after the fourth. Ideally should have 3 as a baby, 1 preschool and final one in year 9. Do you know why she had one before lockdown? Depending on how many she has already had, she may not need another, or at least not yet. Sorry if I have misunderstood your post.
MenACWY is a one off offered to this age group. It is usually given on the same day, so two injections which is really tough if you really hate needles or have had a bad experience.
Will it help if you are with her? You could call the imms team and discuss it with them, they will do whatever it takes to make the situation easier for her. Maybe some emla cream would help her feel better.
It's very difficult, but obviously so important that she has them.
Best of luck to both of you.

Was it the HPV vaccine that your dd had last year? My dd is in Y9 and had it last year. We’ve been offered this booster also.

@ChittyChittyBoomBoom
Yes it's the booster for the one she had in Y9 (I thought the HPV)

@Bugsy73
sorry if unclear, I just copied the info from the email school sent me.
but yes, it's the booster for the HPV from last year plus the MenACY

I'd really like her to have them.
She's had all the jabs she should to date (born in Scotland)

I don't think they'll let me be there no. I asked last time (middle school) and they were really horrible actually - told me I was 'causing her upset'. They didnt' believe she was Autistic despite an NHS multi prof diagnosis. Relations with school aren't great again.

She is possibly less likely to have it if I'm there too.
I just need to get her in the door as she will then be compliant (but angry with me later and throw things, but I can cope with that if she gets her jabs as its more important in the long run)

Only other thing is she is due a flu vacc (nasal spray) as she had Bronchiolitis as a baby. She's been saying her chest is sore for a day or so. She tends to feel things quite a bit being sensory so I'm keeping an eye re that and not over reacting. But I don't want her to have a flu dose / poss C19 symptom as well as two shots in the same fortnight. Emla cream is a good idea thanks (her brother, also ASD has used it) Will the school nurse have some or can I get it from chemist /GP do you know? (dont' want to bother GP unless avoidable)

thank you both x

You can buy emla/ametop from the chemist. I don't think it really makes it any less painful but can help with the nerves.
The nasal flu is a live vaccine, HPV and men aren't so would be ok to have close together, but absolutely hold off if you feel like its too much.
She maybe due her 5th DTP as well, my son is year 9, he is now outstanding 2nd HPV, DTP and Men. Everything has been delayed a bit because of schools being closed.
I work for an imms team and we are very sympathetic to the anxiety caused by injections. It might make you feel better to have a chat with them. School could do with being a bit more helpful!

52andblue · 20/01/2021 22:20

@bugsy thank you SO MUCH for the info. Yes, school have been rubbish (whole other story). I'm going to encourage her lots and hope for the best I think. Fingers crossed!

You're welcome. I really hope she gets on ok x

@Bugsy73

She did it! Hugely proud of her.
Her Year head was great and whisked her to the front.
I was allowed to go with her.
The Nurses were great too and she had both jabs simultaneously.
She was completely silent till we got back to the car then she sobbed but she managed it. I cooked her favourite tea and bought her first bouquet of flowers and a box of chocs to make her feel special.

She has been tired and says she feels sore and I've told her this is all normal and not to worry. She's not had a temp or anything but she's had 4 heavy nosebleeds including two overnight ones. Is this anything to bother the GP with do you think? I am loathe to atm but wanted to check. Appreciate it might not be correct to ask on here but hope ok?

Yay!! That's great to hear! You must be really proud of her.
Nose bleeds aren't a common symptom of the vaccines (she hasn't had the flu spray has she?), does she suffer with nose bleeds usually? maybe stress related or maybe just coincidence.
If they continue I would discuss with your GP; certainly if you are in any way concerned then seek medical advice.

52andblue · 30/01/2021 23:12

@Bugsy73
I am really pleased for he yes and proud too.
sorry to ask about the nosebleed thing, I appreciate asking medical advice on MN is a bit of a faux pas but you were so kind before I hope you don't mind?
She has them occasionally but not so many and so heavy like this just pouring for 20/30 mins.
She is just wiped out poor love.
She was offered the flu spray this year (as she had bronchiolitis as a baby) but we've put it off for a bit as it was too many jabs in the space of a week I thought.
I'll look after her and call the GP next week for advice if they don't stop. thanks for replying. x
