Does anyone else find high temps in their LOs frightening??

I am wondering if I'm a neurotic mummy. My 10mo DD has had a fever for the past 4 days and it peaked this morning at 39.5 and I rushed her off to A&E. They basically said she was fine (viral respiratory infection) and I can't stop checking her and panicking that the worst will happen and I'll miss it and it will be too late. Is it just me or is this normal??

I didn't used to but since DS' temp spiked at 41 degrees and he had a sort of fit I do everything I can to keep his temp down even if it's only slightly raised. Fortunately I coincidentally happened to be in a hospital with him at the time it happened. It's normal to worry when they are poorly though, hope she's better soon.

I hate high temps in kids too young to tell you how they're feeling

Mind you, my dd was very ill with a viral respiratory infection when she was 4 weeks old - and I'm very glad I did rush her off to the doctor. So don't give yourself a hard time, you'll never win

And get well soon to your dd xx

Sounds very normal, it is stressful when they get a temperature spike,

but if you are doing everything that you can to bring it down, it makes you feel less panicky.

Thank you for your reassurance. I've just popped in to check her and she's still breathing quickly but the top of her head feels relatively cool and she's currently only dosed up on calpol as she fell asleep before she could be given neurofen again. I hope that means she's on the mend. I HATE feeling so anxious!

yes, I used to worry about temperature. Unfortunately, one of mine is prone to very high temperatures at the drop of a hat and it used to TERRIFY me when she was a baby (she used to do this horrid thing where she rolled her eyes back into her head). Her highest temperature to date is 42C!

Then one day a wise old doctor told me it's not necessarily the degree of the temperature (though obviously if it's very high, it's a worry for febrile convulsion reasons) but how ill the child appears. e.g. you can have meningitis with a 38C temperature and have a 24 hour virus with a 40C temperature and actually, that calmed me down a lot.

Don't become a slave to your thermometer!

I hope she gets better soon.

Its such a worry when they have a high temp.My son who is 2.4 has had three febrile convulsions in the past but is fine the next day.Although i use a digital thermometer i also bought the stick on teddy temp reader you can put them anywhere on the body and can see at a glance what the temp is.they can stay on for 24 hours or so.Hope she feels better soon.

oh golly - your LOs sound far more frightening than mine has been and you sound so calm about it all! I asked the paed today how long you leave it to see if the meds kick in and she said up to an hour but if all floppy etc to go straight in. My concern is that I wouldn't get to the hospital on time etc. The stuff that nightmares are made of I guess.

May all poorly babies and children get better very soon.
